woo hoo! the replacement is better!
After finally calling Dimplex, I returned the first unit I got, and have upgraded from three stars to five. I will leave the original review (plus updates) below.Pros:1. Shiny, pretty, cheezy faux flames. This is what I was looking for. I have seen a few different faux-flame mini stoves, and this is the best... but there's no mistaking it for a real fire. The embers look real, but the flickering fire part is too pale. (I'm wondering if an orange bulb might fix that, and I'll try it some time. But surely Dimplex would have thought of that?)2. Compact size, and easily movable. Also what I was looking for in my little house.3. Heats up a small space.Middlin' indifferent facts:1. A heater like this has very directional heat... it heats the things in front of it best. This works fine for me, 'cause I point it at ME, the one who gets cold. And others in the room don't feel overheated. If you want more of a whole-room heater, get the oil-filled kind; they're the best for that.Cons:1. No thermostat, a problem that I solve/address with a remote control (intended for holiday lights), so that I can easily turn it on and off.2. Not entirely quiet; it has a constant hum. (Again, the oil-filled units are your best bet there... they don't have a fan.)3. Dimplex customer service is available only during normal working hours, East Coast time. So I found it hard to call them to ask about my first unit.4. There is an odor when running when this is new, but it burns off.The first one I had was very loud, and also the lightbulb burned out in 30 days of infrequent use. The bulb is easily changed, so that's just an annoyance and not a big deal.----- original review, 30 days ago (ish) -----So yes, not to personify my electric stove, but mine is loud and off color. I suspect that something is just plain wrong with it, and will call the company as requested before sending it back. I'll report here about that. For now:Backstory:I know these things are cheesy, but when it's cold and rainy, I just really value the ambiance of a faux fire. I have a small living room, so I need a very small heater, which constrains my choices.Pros:1. This throws a lot more heat than my ceramic heater. It's toasty. It is relevant that it's about five feet away from me and pointed right at me, but it's just what I wanted in that regard.2. Reasonable price for an electric fireplace. I got a remote control outlet thingy that allows me to easily turn it on and off to moderate the heating level.3. Tidy little size is perfect for my need.4. It's gorgeous, with the red enamel case.Cons.1. The noise, noise, noise, noise. Typically, it's a constant rattle, as if someone was running a powersaw in the basement. Sometimes, it makes a more insistent and shrill noise.2. The animated flame things are the wrong color, as compared to other electric fireplaces I've seen. I mean, yes, it's all faux, an no one would mistake it for a real fire. But the animated part on mine is yellow-white, about the color that a lightbulb throws off. It's as if it's missing an orange screen or something. (Again, I suspect a defect here.) The embers, I'll note, are lovely, and very realistic.3. It would absolutely be better with a thermostat. But of course that would make it more expensive.4. As another reviewer mentioned, I don't notice a big difference between the two heat settings.I want to love this thing, but the noise is just not acceptable. And the color of the "flames" is just wrong.I will call them sometime (their customer service line is available only M-F during regular business hours, so I'm not sure when I can call), and report back here with what I learn.Update: I was using this, just after writing the review (day 2 of owning it; haven't called). And it made some new funny noises and there was a smell of something burning.... and then the power-tool-type noise stopped. Now there is a loud fan, but it's not as obnoxious. This probably still means that something is wrong (and the color is still wrong), and I will still call. But I'm much closer to keeping this now. Now, in addition to wishing for a thermostat, I'm wishing for a high/low fan setting, so that it could be quieter.Update, September 2014: So I've just pulled this out for it's second season; I haven't yet turned on the main furnace, and this is getting me by till then. I did get an orange lightbulb, and prefer that color to the one from the white bulb it came with. I still use it with a remote control designed for holiday lights... just on and off.

BROKE AFTER TWO MONTHS
Got this for one of my daughters as a gift. She LOVES it! While the flames are not realistic, they are fun to look at, and it has three settings: (A) Just flame, no heat; (B) flame, low heat; (C) flame, high heat. It really warms up her room fast, and it stays cool to the tough at all times.UPDATE: This broke after two months and I missed the return policy by ten days. The product has also been discontinued by Dimplex and they said they were never able to get parts. And my daughter was using it about an hour 3x week.

Charming and Functional
I wanted the look of a fireplace plus the functionality of a heater but I do not have alot of space in a 1-bedroom apartment. This arrived very fast and it was free shipping - Amazon rocks! But more importantly, this little electric stove is fabulous. The "fireplace flame" is very realistic and when this stove arrived the temperature outside was in the teens - I turned off the apartment's central heating and I used the high setting so see how strong this heater is and in half an hour my apartment was comfortable. It is not noisy and looks well made. It has a very small footprint so in the summertime I can put it away in a closet. When the high heat setting is on the back of the unit is warm to the touch - not hot. Came packed very well and provides a customer service number in case you need help but all you do when you get it is unpack it and plug it in. Eventually the lighbulb that gives the "flame" effect will wear out and you will have to replace the lightbulb but you can easily replace it by unscrewing 3 screws and lifting a small panel in the back of the unit and replace the candelabra bulb. Instructions (3 steps) are on the manual. I am very satisfied with this purchase. It meets my expectations and then some. I love Amazon.Update: It is now December 2019 and this unit has been with me for 8 years and still working perfectly. I've had to replace the light bulb a few times but other than that it's working perfectly. On cold winter days I also use the heater function and no problems at all.

Looks good
The unit looks good but the fan makes a loud grinding noise at the unit heats up. Sometimes you have to give it a good rap to make it stop buzzing. It does put out a good amount of heat but the noise is annoying.

Cute as a button
I would have rated this 5 stars but just couldn't because the fire looks so amazingly fake. I love this little cube because it's cute as the dickens and gives just enough warm up for a cool room in a heated home. The size is perfect, and the quality is wonderful, but my, oh my, you can't even pretend this is a little fire.

Broke after a few months of light use
Bought this because I loved the design and needed a heater for my bedroom on cold nights. It stopped working after a few months of use. The decorative flames light up but the fan doesn't turn on and no heat is emitted from the unit. Unfortunately, the order no longer qualifies for returns or any form of support. Very disappointing.

Very nice heater! But smells a bit.
It's beautifully designed and on of my favourite features is that you can have the flame going without the fan. This was a deal breaker for me because sometimes I don't want the heat, just the flame. Another positive is that the red colour isn't as bright as I thought it would be. It's a lot brighter in the product photo than in real life and that's a good thing. So the only bad thing that I can say is it smells. I've had it for a few days now and it has a heated plastic smell that fills the room. I'm hoping that this will go away eventually because it would be annoying to have that smell every time I turn the unit on.
