does it take batteries?

Hello Bruce, thanks for your interest in this awesome kit. There are no batteries necessary as the vehicles are moved around manually.

Once the mobil unit is built, will it stay together well enough to be played with by a 6-year-old & a 3-year-old?

I have had mine built-up since Christmas and my son who is 7 still plays with it almost every day and it is still in one piece. So I would say yes for the 6 yr old. Not sure about the 3 yr old.
