Q: What does the ringer sound like?

Hard to explain - keep in mind, older technology - just a beep, keeps buzzing as long as user is pushing button, little bit higher pitch, kind of horn type.

Q: Can you just buy the cover as a replacement? Mine is cracked

I don't believe so. If I remember correctly all the electric wiring, etc is attached to the cover. It's all in one piece. Having aid that you might try to contact the distributor.

Q: which wire colors do which functions? i installed, got all the buttons to work, but it won't buzz when the button is pushed in the lobby

The button pressed from the lobby will be connected to the wire that connects to the White-Green wire on the room station.
