A MUST for the family bookshelf!
This is a review long overdue, but important. (okay, I am housebound today with terrible weather and finally catching up). We refer to this book OFTEN (can I say at least 2-3 times a week, becoming shabby and worn out) when watching the news in particular. Some of us (ahem) did not pay enough attention in schooldays (or it was not offered?) to this important topic of which too many adults are sadly ignorant. Too, in addition to giving a clear picture (say, for example, the house/senate, etc) of what our government is and how it works..........it is SIMPLE and CLEAR and sure enough, explains enough to answer a lot of questions! Doubtless there are other similar books available, but we all agree in our home that this is the best volume that gets really USED regularly! :)

Excellent Primer
This book is a wonderful introduction to the very unique system of U.S. Government. The concepts behind the way the government is organized, how it evolved and how it works are all presented in unbiased, straight foward prose. In addition, other important concepts are presented such as the Media, Special Intrest Groups. Political Parties and much more. The effect of these outside influences not only shape the government's public policy but illustrates the way in which the government responds to outside pressure. I feel that this book is an indespensible volume for concerned American Citizens. In contrast to the sometimes shrill, biased, loud, diatribes that pose as news, this book is informative, reasoned, thoughtful, balanced, and a clear look at how and why the government works.I just wish they would lose the "Idiot" in the title. I know this is meant to be lighthearted and to distinguish this series from the other well know competitor, but I can't help be feel a tiny bit insulted. It's probably just me.

Simple, Informative read
I purchased this book for several different reasons; first of all I have recently become enpassioned about politics but felt that I have been missing some of the fundementals. Secondly, I am recently changed my major to Political Science-I am taking my first PoliSci class in the fall. I felt it was important to master some of the basics before attending class. This book has been perfect. It is easy to follow and a fairly simple read. Yet it is quite informative. The content has really helped to clarify some basic concepts. I like the fact that it is in a summary format.I would recommend this book for anyone who is looking for a straight forward approach to government history and structure.

Great study aide!
I used this book to prepare for the American Government CLEP test. It was an easy read and prepared me for almost everything on the test. Keep in mind that it is a little outdated, considering the most recent information is from 2006-2007, and some things have changed since then. However, history is history, and as long as you are aware of current events in government, you will be fine. Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone that wants to learn about how our government works.

Everyone should read this
With civics education seeming to be a no show in most educational systems, we have lost the knowledge concerning our system of government. It should not be left to the biased media of our age to tell us why our government is. Read this book and decide for yourself. Then get involved and VOTE

Informative and yet not too wordy
The Idiots series books are probably one of the best guidebooks about everything you can know under the sun, and this book is one of them. It presents the reader with concise information that is interesting and makes you want to read on. It explains the terminology clearly so you wont have to wonder whats the meaning of each big government word. I'd recommend this book if you are just starting to find out more about US government and politics which is the ideal government to many developing countries all over the world.

The complete idiots guide to U.S. government by Franco Scardino
I found this to be an excellent summary of the subject for students and the casual reader. Many political topics that are discussed in the political environment and media are shown to be simply pro and con academic positions that are based upon an individual's bias.

My thoughts on the Book
I thought the book did a excellent job on describing how the various parts of the Government fit together and function.(Quite detailed) I would have rated the book at Five stars except toward the end I found the author stating his views. This rather than being neutral.
