A high quality lamp for the price
There isn't a whole lot to say about this lamp. Almost everyone has seen one of these types of lamps at some point in their life and thought, "Wow, that's a cool lamp. I want one." Well, chances are if you're looking at this review, you may just get one! My recommendation: get this one. It's very affordable and is a great quality for the price. You get three colors in this lamp: green, blue, and red, and can cycle through all sorts of combinations of colors and modes of operation, including a fade-in-and-out mode featuring all colors. It's all very cool to look at, especially at night. If you relax while looking at the lamp, the lights will start to blur and fill your mind of dreamlike starry visions. It's very neat. Also, when two colors are on at once, they will combine in the middle to make new colors, so there are really about six or seven colors present if combined: blue, green, red, and then yellow/orange (green/red), purple (blue/red), and teal (blue/green). Very cool.My only complaints about the lamp are the overall light-weight cheapness of the materials its made of. It's very flimsy and the lamp could break quite easily if you're not careful. There were a couple times where I gently transported it around the house and thought I had broken it, and I am always very, very careful and gentle with my possessions, especially ones like these. That bothered me a little. I also take issue with the fact it ONLY runs on AAA batteries and doesn't have a jack to plug into an electrical outlet. The battery life doesn't really last that long, and then they do start to run out of juice, the colors morph and I was very fearful that my lamp had already broken. For example, the blue turned a strange aqua marine teal color and would fade quickly, while the other colors still stayed very strong and bright for hours longer. Those are about the only two complaints I have, however, and are rather minor when I consider the fact it only cost 15 dollars. All things considered, it's a very enjoyable, solid lamp to have around the house, and for the price, it really can't be beat in terms of quality. It is a centerpiece, and not really intended as a heavily used lamp. That been said, I plan on also buying a more expensive fiber-optic lamp that plugs in the wall, as well as features more colors and modes. That's just me. This lamp is great for roughly fifteen bucks. Buy it, take it in, and enjoy its ambiance.

Got what I expected to get...
I have loved fiber optics ever since they were very popular back in the 70's. My Mom got one for a gift when I was a kid and set it out in the winter. It is a simple concept that I'm sure you can find details about online. It dazzles kids. I ordered this particular one after I looked at all the reviews, all the products and all the sites where I could get maybe cheaper (money wise,) ones. I chose this one because it had multi colors, it was easy to use and because I thought that the parents of the child I was getting it for could easily put it away if they were getting annoyed with it. The child in question is autistic. I find her hard to buy presents for. This seemed a simple, pleasurable, relaxing choice without annoying noises, that wasn't too mechanical and something the whole family might enjoy. Once I got it (it was delivered promptly,) I took it out of the mismatched packaging and set it up. It had batteries in it and they worked! I pressed the button on the bottom and saw that yes it had different colors but it didn't seem to change colors. That is until I pressed the button multiple times and hit the right setting that made the different colors change. My Mother and I ooohhed and aaahhhhed and I'd wished I'd gotten my Mother this gift. It's cheaply made but as I recall in the 70's they were cheaply made too. I'm very happy with it!

Fun, fun, fun
This item has a lot of various settings. It has a total of 3 colors (red, blue and green) By pushing a button on the bottom you can switch it to a variety of color options.1) solid color either all green, all red or all blue.2) combinations of two different colors (red/green, blue/red, green/blue)3) all three colors on at one time4) all three colors randomly switching. All the color settings stay stationary except the very last one which has all three color randomly fading in and out. There are a lot of fiber optic strands so you get a lot of color. It isn't skimpy in that regard and the fibers spread out evenly. This style is battery operated which is what I wanted. We don't plan on having it lit 24/7 so the battery usage didn't seem an issue. If we planned on buying something that was going to stay lit, we would probably have purchased one that plugs in.Although some versions are available that rotate which would probably be very cool, they are a lttle bit more expensive. Because I wasn't going to use it all the time, I just wanted a simple more reasonably priced light and using the last setting with the three colors changing, gave me enough of the effect I was looking for.As for the rating the educational value the only thing I would think it might be used educationally for is as a way of talking about the three basic colors for a very young child. As a science tool, it might be good for learning about fiber optics and transmission of light. But really I don't consider this a "toy"

Decorative
It is quite attractive even when the light is out. It takes 3 AA batteries and there is no plug in option, but the batteries last a pretty long time. You change the color combination by turning the light off and back on again, so if you have a favorite setting, it can be a bit annoying to turn it off and on so many times (to scroll through all of the options) to get back to your favorite setting, but it isn't really a big deal. It doesn't give off enough light to do mood lighting all by itself - more like the amount of light an average nightlight would give. Overall I am pleased.
