excellent
Not typical of Patterson but I loved it. The history, descriptions, the characters we fascinating and timely with all the historical stuff on tv subscriptions. Also, with the new Viking of England.

Not believable; Crass, vulgar
Although action-packed, the story line is peripatetic and too frequently requires a massive suspension of disbelief. Characters are two-dimensional and not realistic. Too many gratuitous and vulgar references to sex and genitalia. When I finished the book I threw it out. I was just glad to be done.

Good not great.
The writing is well done like all of Patterson’s books. However, the story was a little too Robin Hood-ish. Plus the flips and tricks the Jester does are hard to visualize without seeing a Jar-Jar Binks front flip in your head.

one of his best!
Tied in my opinion for Patterson's best book. Not the usual plot line. Very entertaining. Set in the time of the Crusades. Gritty at times, as well as inspiring and exciting, with well-developed characters and story, with a bit of romance and humor. Historical novel. Highly recommended.

So good, I Couldn't Put It Down
A friend recommended this to me as being Patterson's best book, and now that I have read it, I agree. It is part Braveheart, part Gladiator. Hugh De Luc runs a small village inn with his beautiful young wife. But the tyrannical Lord Baldwin and his minions terrorize the village and exact huge taxes and kill and torture citizens. Hugh De Luc goes to war to fight for a better world, only to be disillusioned by the violence. He comes home to find that he has a young son who was killed and that his wife was abducted. He goes on a single minded mission to find her, becoming a jester so that he can infiltrate Baldwin's court. Along the way, he is aided by a beautiful noble woman and a wise old jester. The book is about love, loyalty, and the dream of a world at peace. One of the best books I've ever read.

And Now, here's something a little different...
Didn't get into it right away. I was expecting a time jump from "then" to "now". When that didn't occur I had to go back and re-read some sections to catch up on the story. Lots of turns and weaves, an entertaining book. Lots of ups and downs with the main characters, some which got me involved with the people. I wish I could write like this, it is a true talent.Patterson's writing style is so different from Tom Clancy or Michael Crichton, the short chapters seem to lead me through the story faster and make transitions between events and people easier to follow. After reading over 20 of his books, I'm still hooked.

The story was easy to follow and had easy reading too
An interesting period of history to set a book. The story was easy to follow and had easy reading too.Unfortunately there were some distracting inaccuracies in the historical details. I doubt that most people would be bothered by it though.I will definitely read more from this author as the chapters are short and the writing style perfect for someone who has a busy life with lots of interruptions to their reading time.

I loved it
I thought it was a great book. I've been a fan of Patterson's but just recently (past year). So I still have a lot of his older novels to catch up. And this was completely out of the box for his style but even though at the first 50 pages or so in my mind I was thinking, ughhh I am not going to like this. I actually stayed up until 3 a.m. finishing it because I became so enthralled with the character, Hugh and his quest. Sure, it was a bit far fetched at times, but it is a fiction novel meant to entertain not educate us on Medieval times. It wasn't my favorite of his but I have been disappointed in his novels as of recently so I was hesitant but I was pleasantly surprised.

Speechless....
This is one of the best tales I have ever read. I first read it years ago when it was first released and it stuck with me. I've just finished it for the second time and I am grateful for the opportunity to enjoy it again. It has everything...action, romance, despair and elation. You will not be disappointed.......
