It works, protects my house circuit
Tested on a known dodgy garden circuit. Damp has gotten into one of the outside boxes, and had been tripping my MCB in the house - taking all of the house sockets down with it. So I put a plug on the garden circuit and passed it through this RCD adaptor. Now it sparks and trips beautifully every time I put the plug in. The garden circuit now never works, but the MCB in the house consumer unit never trips. Instead this RCD unit trips out first which is great. It's doing exactly what it's supposed to do.I did spend hours searching for a mini MCB/RCD unit but it does not exist. Only these ones advertised as RCD. I do not think the dodgy circuit is leaking to ground, because the RCD in my consumer unit didn't trip - it was the MCB which was tripping. So I think there is a live-neutral short in the garden circuit, but the good news is that this unit (advertised as RCD only) seems to be detecting that short as well.

Might not work as you think
Not written in the advertising, and to clarify what this device does.RCD stands for residual current device. These devices may also be known as residual current circuit breakers (RCCBs).Although RCDs are designed to trip in the event of an electrical imbalance, they do not protect against overcurrent or short-circuiting.Your fuse or modern circuit breaker does those things.Your main consumer unit (old fuse box) RCDs typically disconnect the circuit when the leakage current reaches 30mAIf you had 6 items in a 6 way extension lead, termanated in a 13A plug, and one of those items leaked to earth, A, you wouldnt know which is causing the problem. B, it would switch everything in that extension lead off, including a light, and if your in the dark you dont want the light going off.The RCD now fitted in a consumer unit for lights is a longer trip than the main RCD power sockets, showers, etc tripModern electrical appliances and items such as power supplies all have low levels of current leakage. If you had 6 power supplies all leaking a little, that would/should add up and trip an RCDUse an extension lead with switches, switch off unused devicesC, it talks about leakage, but we all know a RCD measures the current flowing out in and out of an appliance, if either of the live or neutral shorts to earth, there is an unbalance and the RCD trips.Does this trip if a neutral wire contacts an earth wire?Test your appliances one at a time, if the RCD trips, you have a badly leaking device, could be a phone charger, those from China dont follow the correct gap between the live AC and the low voltage on its pcbs. Not knowing the difference between a earth leakage device (banned in consumer units) and a RCD that watches current flow in and out of a device, and if eather a live wire or a neutral come in contact with earth a RCD would cut out.So a neutral (N) cable wire came in contact with an earth (E) wire it will cut the power. The reason for this review as nothing in the information talks about this unbalance and only talks of live leakage, which makes me think its not a RCD but an earth live leakage only.So it might be fine with a lawn mower, hedge cutters, you know the devices that are taken outside and you cut its cable.Modern hedge cutters also are double insulated, they do not have an earth wire, so would this trip?Im going to test to see if this RCD trips if an neutral wire connects to an earth wire, to see if it does operate as a RCD, not a live leakage only.So many advertising has incorrect or missing, misleading information, there is nothing in this ad that talks about unbalance, i have contacted the seller, waiting for a reply.07 Nov 2024, watch this spaceNote, i am a qualified electrician, dont mess around with mains cables. Also will this trip before the house RCDWaitch this space, this was rushed 😷

Safety all the way!
So, when my 81 yr old dad couldn’t find his emergency cut-off plug in his garage, he decided he couldn’t wait for me to help him and went ahead & cut his side of the neighbours conifers, with his hedge trimmer. He sliced through the hedge trimmer’s power cord mid-job and was so, so lucky he didn’t electrocute himself!!After a stern ticking off from me, and me helping to look for said plug, I just decided to buy these new ones. They are brilliant for the price! They work an absolute treat!I have put one on the NEW hedge trimmer & one on his lawn mower. This way there’s one connected at all times & cannot be misplaced.
