Not an how to book but lovely to look at and read. And especially the detail and skill in every psinting. Review: Inspiring Women Down Bohicket Road, beautiful book - As a Mary Whyte fan, fellow watercolorist, art teacher and one familiar with John's Island, I could not wait to get her latest book. Not only can she paint masterfully, she is a very visual writer with the best of them! The story made me smile, made me cry and pulled at my heart. The story definitely is one to be shared. There are no coincidences in life, its all orchestrated by the Lord above and I love that in Alfred's legacy. The artwork is stunning as always and puts faces to these beautiful women Down Bohicket Road, one I've traveled many times. A treasure.

Beautiful water color paintings!
As an artist myself, I am interested in studying the style of the masters. This is a beautiful book that can be set on a coffee table for viewing as well as a one full of fabulous paintings and comments by the artist. Her style is amazing and would be a treat for anyone interested in watercolor painting.

Remarkable story about an artist’s journey
Fortunately for us, Mary Whyte writes as well as she paints, which, as you can see by this book’s cover, is very well indeed. Retreating to the Charleston area to recuperate from treatment (successful) for cancer, Mary Whyte expected to paint little towheads playing in the dunes of Johns Island. But the Universe had other plans, leading her instead to a group of old Gullah churchwomen who took her in and nurtured her. She began to paint them, and where her paintings had been technically accomplished, they became luminous. These watercolors are like none you’ve ever seen and this story of her journey is no less wonderful. Buy this book. Not only is it beautiful, the profits support the church.

Down Bohicket Road
I love this book. Mrs. Whyte seems to be the same kind of person I am. I love anything pertaining to the South and it's culture. We have 2 acres in Beaufort S.C. on St.Helena Island (one which is for sale I might add) and their is a lady there that has a restaurant she cooks Gullah type foods and makes baskets to sell.. I love the way Mrs. Whyte fit into the community of these wonderful people and became a part of their lives. Her paintings are so inspiring. Also the Christian Faith these women had that God would provide for them NO MATTER WHAT! The quilt making and the way she expressed all the love that was stitched into each and everyone. I only wish I could have been there along side of them talking and giving God the Glory. God bless you for taking the time to write this book.I felt like I was right there with you. Mrs. Whyte, your paintings are so "AWE INSPIRING."God has given you two great talents.Writing and painting. Edith S. Epting

So many amazing paintings
Mary Whyte is probably my favorite watercolorist. The images of her paintings in this book are very good quality and I am even more amazed by her ability to create luminous skin tones in darker values while also capturing the light airy ness of steam and balancing them with intense and saturated values. I would love to learn her tricks and skills directly from her but in the meantime I will try to piece together some lessons through all these vibrant paintings… and eventually I’ll quit feasting on the images long enough to read the thoughtful narrative on her subjects. ** this is not a book of painting lessons but a collection of her works with image quality good enough to see nuances in value and color to study her use of both. She does offer some painting lesson books

Mary Whyte, a treasure for the eye and the heart.
My book is traveling right now, having been enjoyed by me, now onto others who have not had the pleasure of seeing Mary Whytes' incredible talent! She has captured the raw emotion , the very essence of these beautiful southern women. He talent as a water colorist is as if she captures the very soul of the human with her strokes. Truly a pleasure for the eye, also the heart in her story . Will buy more of her work. Loved every page!

Beautiful paintings, beautiful insight into the Lowcountry
I love Mary Whyte's paintings so was very happy to see all the work in this book. Enough detail and large enough to really see the work, too. Plus Mary is a writer. She brings you into the world of the South Carolina Lowcountry women she had come to know through her work and her living among them on St. John's Island. Love this book. However, it is not a book about technique and how she paints. For that see her other books, which are full of information.

I love every book that Mary Whyte writes and this book is no exception. The way that Mary captures light in her paintings is extraordinary and the mark of a true professional artist whose work is highly prized. I particularly like the paintings "Wednesday's Chores" and "Sweet Potato Pie" - such character in there - painting in realism that almost edges towards the photographic. Published by the University of South Carolina Press, the paintings and descriptions are glorious. More than what I would usually pay for an eBook, but when it comes to Mary Whyte, her books are worth every penny. A wonderful book, indeed.

Mary Whyte is one of the most accomplished watercolor artists doing figurative work today. Ms. Whyte has published instructional watercolor books which I have loved but it is "picture books" that I love the most. This book is especially beautiful. The work covers 2 decades of figurative work of a group of Gullah women of Johns Island South Carolina. If you liked her Working South Book which is amazing you will love Down Bohicket Road.
