Highly recommended
Loved this book! I am a afficianado of the railroad so I read this book cover to cover in one sitting. Highly recommend this book for railfans or for those who have a general information in the history of the United States

Eh.
Book is very technical and analytical. Boring delivery. Kinda like a history lesson with a fire hydrant worth of info. Was kind of hoping for a little more drama in the story

Nice book
Got this as a gift for my son that is fascinated by steam locomotives and how the railroad was built. Nice book!

Re-titled "Rival Rails"
This is the exactly the same book previously published in Hard Cover as "Rival Rails". A good book, but do not be misled by some publishing chicanery if you have read the hard cover. I didn't see any reference to the previous publication anywhere in the paperback edition. There aught to be a law against this kind of thing.

Disappointing
A extremely dense and overwritten report of the COMPETITION between the railroad "lords" fighting for the railroad lines. An overload of names. Little about the actual construction, workmen, and work conditions. The title "Iron Horses" is misleading.

Three Stars
A blizzard of names and dates but very thin on the significance of the railroad to day-to-day life. Disappointing.
