Kyousougiga Complete Series DVD/Blu Ray [Blu-ray]

Ok. This is animation.
Toei Animation (the studio behind Dragon Ball Z, Sailor Moon, One Piece and Digimon) went full-on Gainax here. This series looks amazing! No other words about it, besides how you can get confused about it and how the visuals look can be compared to the likes of FLCL. For the story, you can look at the back cover. It is... something. But, the animation will take you away!Discotek Media's release, like many releases of anime outside Japan of course, is a bit worse than the original Japanese counterpart (video quality-wise). It happens no matter what to assure that there won't be any reverse imports (alas Aniplex and Pony Canyon taking this stuff way too seriously). Correct me if I'm wrong, but since the Blu-ray is in 1080i, I believe you should watch this on a smaller screen. For examples of the images, follow this link: https://imgur.com/a/tSCLqH7Here's some unnecessary information, like chapter breaks. The Blu-ray does this WAY better than the DVD. The DVD's chapter breaks (with the titles being one title per episode) are sometimes all over the place and it won't feel right (let alone take away some professionalism). Discotek's IGPX DVD release is a better example of this. The Blu-rays are MUCH better (if not perfect), and all of the main content is in one title (Blu-ray Disc 1 has the ONA and TV Series as separate titles). I suppose the Blu-rays and DVDs are actually being manufactured by separate companies, but whoever does the DVDs REALLY need to step up. Oh wait, I gotta get a more modern release than this, maybe like Wild 7: Another.Discotek Media's release is packed with like every single special feature from the Japanese releases, excluding the audio commentaries (according to CDJapan). Yes, this release even includes the extended version of Episode 5.5. However, NOTE TO DVD WATCHERS! The only extras on the DVD version (that being DVD Disc 2) are the broadcast version of Episode 5.5 as well as Episode 10.5.Features are as follows:Blu-ray 1: Complete ONA (with original Episode 00) + TV Series Episodes 1-5 (with TV Version Episode 00)Blu-ray 2: TV Series Episodes 6-10 (Special Features: Episode 5.5 (Broadcast and Extended Versions), Episode 10.5, TV Commercials (with Alternative Previews), Sponsor Cards, Creditless Openings and Endings (called "Title-less" on disc, and includes Episode 6 and ONA Episode 00 versions), as well as a special fully-animated 5-minute preview of the ONA)DVD 1: TV Series Episodes 1-6 (with TV Version Episode 00)DVD 2: TV Series Episodes 7-10 (Special Features: Episode 5.5 (Broadcast Version) and Episode 10.5All in all, watch this. Try it now on Crunchyroll. All of the DVD's content is there. You will be amazed! If you like it just as yours truly, support this release!

A Great buy, but read the fine print.
This is a great deal on a Wonderful series, especially if you can pick it up both DVD & Blueray for the "around $25.00 range".Here's the kick in the pants, (and honestly, I missed this in the description when purchasing)There is NO English Dub.Now for all you sub purists, I will give you the raspberry, and I will say that the original Japanese voice actors were wonderful to listen to; there were NO "nails on a chalkboard" high-skreeching girl chatter in this one. But I feel like I miss some of the story if I can't visit both the English Sub & the Dub as occasionally "tense" and innuendo is lost in the translation. This piece of work is unique in that, even if you do not understand a word you can still enjoy it. Each episode is set in such a way as to remove the audience from there perspective of reality, even to go as far as to force the viewer to accept a reality that doesn't adhere to any perceivable continuity, either in physics or linear time; the episodes aren't even arranged in a linear order!!I know that sounds like complete chaos, but the chaos IS terribly entertaining. For the most part, each episode can hold it's own without requiring the others to tie the story together... yet they do by the end; It's quite the ride!SO, to summarize:Always read the language in the description before you purchase. There is no English Dub. A Dub is not really necessary to enjoy this work.

An underappreciated masterpiece finally gets a (great) NA home release
Kyousougiga's a strikingly-animated story of a family dealing with their extraordinary circumstances, and features some rather excellent writing; giving the viewer just enough information to let them intuitively figure out the big picture of the plot and characters without inundating you with endless dialog. Going into details would run into spoiler territory, so I'll leave the description of the series itself there. The release itself is quite comprehensive, including:Episodes 00-10 of the TV series, and "episodes" 5.5 and 10.5 (a special featuring the voice cast touring the real-world city of Kyoto, and a cumulative narrated recap of the series for those who may have gotten lost)Episodes 00-5 of the original web animation seriesCreditless Opening and Ending (both versions)Some original/unused animation footage not present in the show properAll the pre-airing TV ads and "next time on" segmentsIt comes packaged in a fairly sturdy 4-disc Bluray case with a nice vertical slipcover*. The cover insert has a pretty graphic of the cast on the backside, visible on the inside of the case. The BD encodes are decent (average 25Mbps MBAFF), with some noisy spots in lieu of color banding artifacts. Some of the 2011 footage is a little blocky around detail lines, but probably won't be noticed unless you pause and look for it. Audio sounds nice and clear (stereo LPCM), and the subtitles look good and seem to be well-written.I haven't had reason to look at the DVDs as of yet.*Some movies/shows drop the slipcases from later printing runs. Anime tv series releases generally do not do this (as the audience tends to be fairly collectible-focused), but I don't know enough about Discotek to say with 100% certainty.

This series is amazing and I'm soooo happy it finally came out on dvd! The art and animation are phenomenal, the characters are interesting and quite charming, and the crazy plot makes this a super enjoyable ride. Five stars all the way for the series. It came in basically perfect condition even though it was labeled as used by the seller and I am super happy with it
