Excellent High Capacity Hard Drive
The SanDisk Professional 8TB hard drive is very well made. Solid construction. Very elegant on the desktop. Drives are also stackable. It plugs into the Thunderbolt connection (cable supplied) of my Apple Mac Studio and was up and running within a few minutes. Drive is pre-formatted.The drive is powered by an external power plug (also supplied). When applying power to my Mac and SanDisk the drive does not spin up but waits for the Mac to power up. Both take about the same time to initialise and be ready for use. Perfect for storing my large photo library for use with Adobe Lightroom. The drive isn’t silent as it’s a mechanical hard drive but it isn’t irritating to use. It sits under my monitor next to the Mac Studio. There is enough audible feedback to show the drive is reading/writing. It is a quiet drive compared to others I have used, and it’s certainly a lot quieter than my NAS drive.Drive temperature is slightly warm when it’s been used for a few hours. Perfectly acceptable.Windows or Apple Mac Operating Systems power down the drive by default to save energy. This can be disabled in the OS settings. It’s easy to find the step by step instructions on the SanDisk support web page.

DON'T BUY FOR VIDEO EDITING
This hard drive is most likely fine for storing footage for back up or time capsule etc - but if you want a large capacity drive for editing film projects, do not buy this drive. It falls asleep whilst you're using it in the editing software and constantly has to wake itself up, it makes a god awful crunching / grating sound when in operation, and it disconnects itself completely at random, the cable is secure and the surface solid - no movement... just disconnects itself. Its worth paying a little extra to avoid the hassle this thing brings for video editing.

Reliable external storage
Good value for the money and as usual very reliable. This is the 3rd large storage device I have from Sandisk. Very happy with it. I use it as a backup of a backup drive. Performance is excellent.

Automated backups for a MacBook Pro
I have this attached to my new UGREEN Revodok Max 213, Thunderbolt 4 Dock. So everytime I plug the charging cable from my dock to my MacBook Pro I get automated backups. The unit is big. It's expensive. It looks amazing. As it's a backup drive it doesn't need to be fast, it just backs up on a schedule. Being mechanical (and not SSD), it's a little noisy with all the clicks & whirling of the seeking heads on the platters but once it's finished it idles and powers down until it's needed again.Set up was the easiest ever, just plugged in and my Mac recognised it and asked if I wanted to set up backups. First backup took about 30mins, everything since just a few mins. It's very expensive. But it's built like a tank and the enterprise drive inside should be reliable for years to come.

Very fast file transfers
Very small well-made. File transfers are very quick and do not slow down due to good heat management

Noisy and slow… not recommended
Slow, noisy, sounds like a jet aircraft on takeoff… this is not a great purchase for a desktop drive.I leave it unplugged most of the time. And I would not trust it as my only backup.

Not reliable major failure after 6 months.
Bought 6 months ago as wanted a solid reliable fast hard drive. The drive started to fail a few days ago, steadily got worse as was disconnecting during file transfers or writing files if they took more than a few minutes. Currently have a support ticket with WD. Previous G Drives (before owned by Sandisk / WD) lasted for years. This drive has failed with several; critical video projects on it which means I will miss deadlines. Having had major issues with four WD Passport drives and an SDD drive recently, I am having concerns with this manufacture and may have to go back to Lacie/Seagate.

Exactly what I needed
Great hard drive for what I needed. I'm a wedding filmmaker and photographer and this hard drive is fast enough for me to work straight off of. I don't really understand the noise complaints. It makes a bit of noise but nothing major. I think we've gotten so focussed on everything being silent. I certainly wouldn't say it's a distraction at all. Just a normal hard drive noise.
