I would say refer to your owner's manual if you don't have one you can look it up on the quadra-fire website. that will give you the max BTU for the unit and the standard t-stat setting for optimal efficiency.

The inner diameter is larger than the thermocouple it covers, with a bit more space. The exact inner diameter is 5/16 th’s of an inch
