Yes, that's completely normal. They don't taste like that. I'm on my 3rd bottle and they've all smelt like that every day I open them. They're good.

They’re about 20mm long x 7mm. But if your parent struggles, just break open the capsule and add to a spoonful of yogurt. I found them to be amazing for my asthma and any respiratory issues x
