Great hardware, but avoid X-Rite's software and use the free DisplayCAL instead
I sell products online, for which the colour is especially important. When I replaced my old monitor with my current, I discovered that some product images I have were far from accurate, and though I was more confident with the colour rendition of my current monitor there's been a nagging doubt. I thought a colour calibration tool would be much more expensive, and I consider this good value for money if you need it.First use of the calibrator, I used the easy mode of X-Rite's software. It only took about five minutes. Everything looked a little too green, which I assumed was because my mind was still compensating for the pre-calibration settings. I let the software continuously monitor for changes in ambient light, which I thought a nice feature. That night I left the PC on as normal, as I backup my drives at night and when the last is done the computer is set to go to sleep. The next morning, the monitor wouldn't come on again (I also have an old LCD TV as a second "monitor", which I hadn't calibrated, which did come on). I had to restart the machine to wake the monitor up again. This seems to be a problem reported by a few users which has never been fixed. I also noticed that a lot of my cursors (drag-and-drop in Thunderbird, for example), were showing a distinct magenta fringe. And the hand cursor in gmail was pink. This didn't seem right. Out of interest I also tried placing a red piece of transparent plastic over the ambient detector (a crude experiment) to see how it changed the monitor image --- it didn't at all, perhaps because of my misunderstanding. I noticed when doing this that the calibrator was not pulsing its light until I had started the software, so perhaps it was sleeping.Doing some searching, I discovered the solution to be just to uninstall X-Rite's software, and instead install DisplayCAL (a free download -- but financial donations welcomed). A very easy process, it took about half-an-hour for a much better calibration. I have lost the ambient light feature I refer to above, but it's not a huge loss (I suspect the detector would only get swamped my paper on my desk anyway). Before searching for a solution, I was a little worried that I had wasted my money. However it seemed unanimous among people who know much better than myself, that the hardware is the best for the price --- better than the Spyder5, and on a par (albeit slower) with i1Display. Regardless, I'm very happy and confident with the colour rendition of my monitor now I've used DisplayCAL.I'm tempted to give this three stars, but perhaps that would be too harsh (on the other hand, four may be too generous). I do think that X-Rite should dump their software, and come to a financial arrangement with DisplayCAL and ArgyllCMS (the colour management system behind the scenes) --- it would benefit all three parties.I haven't yet used the ColorChecker Passport, and will update my review when I do.
