Could I attach this to an existing handbar above the window on the inside, which is too high for my mother to reach?

Don't see reason why not. It attaches to the top of the window frame. It is not as stable as the one mounted on the ceiling, and thus not so good alone but in combo with the door frame/handle it should be easy to learn.

Would it be something I could keep in my bag and use with different people that give me rides home from church and to dr. ? ? ?

Hi Jacque! I purchased this exclusively for my mother's use! And because my family and her friends take turns in giving her rides (Church, Doctors appointments, movies, grandchildren, etc.) She can adjust the Car Caddie to ANYONE'S car, van, truck. It has a quick connect/disconnect clip which she can clip to outside of roof rack, or inside the car on the door frame from the window. The best part it is super strong, lightweight and weighs ounces and folds/wraps into the palm of her hand or stashed in her bag! It is portable and a tool which aids her in getting into and out of anyone's vehicle, which maintains her independence and dignity. I hope my review was helpful!

The manufacturer's web site says you close the window after you hook it on the frame. Is that necessary or can you leave the window down?

Aug 18, 2022, I see in the Stander Car Caddie video (Standers Inc) on Amazon, that the strap being is used on the window frame and the window is open (woman's hand wraps around the open window frame once she's standing). However, I see the seller's reply above states it is intended to be used with the window closed so the strap will not slip across the top of the window frame. Perhaps you should contact the company for the definitive answer. I'm sure you know, it's most important to be safe.

Would it be possible to hook this on the refridgerator for my service dog to be able to open the door?

Alicia- I bought mine 2 yrs ago to assist my elderly father in and out of my car. It never worked very well. I would be fearful of having it hooked on the frig door. Depending on how strong and type of service dog you own, it might work. If I could locate the one I bought I would just ship it to you free of charge. I would need your mailing address. Jeri W.

Strong and helpful

Great for getting in to my van if it is wet or my boots are muddy so you could slip. Also amazing for my mum who is disabled to get in and out of her car.I have it attached to the middle head rest in my van and works a treat really strong and sturdy.

The best use for this device is to use to assist closing the door, if you use it as an aid to getting in or out of your car you are liable to trap your leg/head in the door.
