If you find YouTube videos on dieting confusing, then try this book!
This book has been recommended by a senior nurse in our local clinic. Her copy is on loan to a local G.P.! It's at a good price. I am classed as pre-diabetic and this diet has the right pitch to help me. I don't know about nutritional science, so YouTube videos at the master's level are way beyond my grasp. I am greatly pleased to find this book easy to grasp with the brief technical information. Based on what I have eaten using the book as a source these are delicious meals. I started my weight loss by weighing around 118 KG; my height is 1.803 Meters. My B.M.I is 36.42, Obese range* UpdateSince April 23, I have been on this diet and stuck with it. To date so far, as of 4th July 2023, I have lost 1 stone. As of 11 July 2023, my glucose index had reduced from 88 mmls to 52 mmls. 40 mmls is classed as normal. The nurse Jean said, "... it's going the right way!"The weight drops off faster in the initial few weeks or so. Later than this time, the loss reduces to a pound or pound and a half of a week or so. This is normal. As of 31/ August 2023I have been less strict in adhering to this diet. A few biscuits, and some chips, once or twice a week, and my weight still dropped by 2.5 lbs in a month. A treat is important as it can boost morale. As of 06 September 2023This diet does work as part of a strategy of healthy diet, exercise and weight control. These work together and you can stay healthy by observing these factors and acting accordingly. As of 26 September 2023My weight continues to reduce by 1 lb or so per week or per few weeks. If you would like to lose weight gradually, over time, this diet does work. If you check your meats before you buy, which have green traffic light symbols on the packaging, such as sliced roast beef is both healthy and tasty.* As of 24 October 2023I have checked my figures and since April 2023 i have lost in weight 2 stones and 2 lbs.As of 21 November 2023Bit disappointed this time. Only lost 2 lbs! I will need to restrict my treats! But at least it's not gone the wrong way!As of 19 December 2023The trend of losing a few pounds a month continues. I have lost 2.4 lbs. The reverse could happen with the festivities and routine overeating at this time of the year. So don't punish yourself if you do.As of 16 January 2024As I predicted, I only lost a pound. I had no chocolates at all. But the foods I have enjoyed over the festivities must have still made their mark!As of 30 January 2024As of today, I had a yearly cardiac test. Using a computer tablet and sensors. This went fine. Also, I have had my yearly medical. The results are positive. My b.p. is 120:80. My mmls are down from 52 mmls when last measured, and are now 44 mmls. Healthy mmls is 40. This reduction in my mmls is directly due to this diet! My resting pulse is 67 b/m. This is due to two factors. My car has been scrapped. So I am walking even more. Part of my new walk is up a long hill. And the diet I have been eating has lots of fruits; oranges and apples, grapes. Sugar from fruits is healthier and not like the sugars you put in your coffee. I am informed by Google and a nurse. So I have been more often to the loo. And bigger motions too. These combined, have lost me weight. Since April 2023 I have lost 2 stones and 9 pounds. My local nurse agrees, a treat such as a chocolate bar, or a scone with jam, once in a while does not harm. In conclusion, the two alternating nurses following my treatment plan now both say about my pre-type 2 diabetic condition, "This is more than good. It is very - well controlled." This is a significant definition that this diet is working as it's designed. As of 27 February 2024For some reason, I am really hungry. More hungry than usual. My sister says it is the cold weather and I need to eat more fortifying foods. I had a burger instead of the salads that usually suffice. I have eaten more over the odd few days; beef, fish, and chicken to stem these strong hunger cravings. As of 12 March 2024As from the date 16 January 2024, when I was last weighed on medically calibrated scales, I have lost around 7 pounds in weight. I weigh at the moment 100.4 K.G. My B.P. is 127:75. My height is 1.803 meters. My Body Mass Index (B.M.I.) is 29.9. Just in the overweight class. For the first time in several years, I am in this class. As a treat, I am making myself a beef burger with onions, tomato, and curry powder to jazz it up. And a KitKat chocolate bar. Since April 23, I have on this diet lost currently 3 stones and 4 lbs.As of 21 March 2024I had my yearly foot test linked to being pre-type 2 diabetes. The nurse commented that my feet were fine. She was delighted with what I had to say about my current physical condition. Including that, I have lost 12 stones over several years since around 2008. The nurse, while I was attending the clinic, asked me for a blood sample for testing. As of 9th April 2024I have been feeling tired, so I chose to eat more food. Foods outside my diet as a vitamin D deficiency could be due to not enough meat. I had the results of these blood tests back and it's been detected that I have a deficiency in vitamin D, and in other terms, B12. This is to be investigated in my local clinic via a telephone call with a staff member. It's fairly common apparently. With being tired, and choosing to eat more for the first time I have put weight on, of 3 lbs over a month. I am not going to punish myself for this. it's normal to be human and put weights on occasionally. After googling potential food issues, I am eating more green light foods. Instead of one, I am having two slices of chicken. With a baked potato and some baked beans, all of which are allowed on this diet. Just more of the same. I have, I feel, been too strict with adhering to this diet and its proportions. And I am widening the choice of foods I eat. After losing 12 stones, I have loose skin or my limbs and body. So many of my clothes are now baggy on me.* As of 25 April 2024My nurse telephoned me for a consultation about my deficiency in vitamin D. It's common. A normal healthy person has a range of 150-250 units. Mine is at 20! This is common in wintertime as it's created by sunlight on the skin. And being covered up in winter is why. So I need vitamin D tablet supplements. These are required to be compatible with my other meds. So I required a chat with my pharmacist. I briefly explained some facts and my nurse was supportive. They are also shared that I had googled this condition. And that I need boosts given by foods rich in such vitamins. These are Salmon and Tuna, vegetables, and eggs. She agreed. I have been too strict with this diet and I need a variation of healthy foods.* As of 03 May 2024Today I bought an over-the-counter vitamin D booster tablet, Colecalaserol, to fill the deficit in vitamin D. It as I said is a common issue. My advice is 1 tablet at 20,000 units per week and to take the course. Then after this, take multivitamins. I am eating more fish, veg, and rice as well as the G.I. Diet recommendations. And the walking exercise. I do not drink or smoke.* As of 03 July 2024My B.M.I here now at this time 30.56 Obese still just. I have lost around 42 lbs since starting this diet, based on the weight I remember I started and added to the first paragraph of this review. The earlier figure of 3 stones and 4 lbs is based on a different measure of my weight at that time that I had forgotten. My present weight of mid-15 stones is more accurate than the previous estimation. It has been a long time since I weighed this amount.

Life changing - simple to get great results
Brilliant book - it's so easy to understand while also being very comprehensive and knowledgeable. I learned enough to lose 4 stone healthily within just over 2 months and while still having plenty of nutrition. Truly life changing! The book has colour coded guides for easy reference on many food groups and meal planning is so simple to do.I'd especially recommend this to people with diabetes which is why I followed it - it worked so well my sugar levels are better than average now, effectively 'getting rid' of the diabetes, and the consultant I saw at group meetings in hospital even used me as an example of how successful someone could be in managing the condition. I couldn't have done that without this book

A good explanation of GI and extending that to good eating habits
This book explained the theory behind the GI diet as well as the principles of healthy eating in general. It then combines a pure GI approach alongside other good preactice such as low calorie and low fat to flag foods as red/yellow or green. You can eat pretty well what you like from green, a little of yellow and avoid red. Simple but effective.Does it work? Yes. I lost a stone(14lbs) in the first month and the rate has now steadied at the predicted 1 pound/week. I haven't felt hungry, in fact on occasion I've felt like it was too much! The hardest bit is applying it while away from home on business trips and although Gallop gives a few tips its still tricky finding suitable foods. Be aware that this is a more "strict" diet than some other "GI diets" (eg the GI Bikini diet) and makes some low GI foods red-light items that the others consider OK. My only criticism is that there are too few recipe ideas. Anthony Warral -Thompson's GI book is much better for that. The book itself is well written, quite light hearted, avoids being technical and short enough not to become boring.

Frustrating for those needing information
I was recommended this book, however I am somewhat disappointed by it. I was expecting a book which outlined different foods and their rating on the Glycemic Index, however the author makes no effort at all to identify to the reader which foods are 'Red' because of their fat or salt content, and which are 'Red' because of their Glycemic Index. I'm sure this book is very good for losing weight (yes eating low fat food is a good idea), but that is not why I personally bought the book. The index is time consuming to use (not alphabetical, but grouped into 'types' of food - which requires second guessing into which group the author has placed a food), and some very obvious food items are missing. The book is sprinkled liberally with the author's opinions and biases, with frequent references to scientific studies justifying the consumption of a particular foodstuff, however it is well established that these studies, out of context, are misleading at worst. The author is, by missing out the supporting information, therefore perpetuating popular misconceptions regarding the health benefits of, e.g. wine.I also find it perplexing that the author spends some time slating exercise as a weight loss mechanism (the example in the book regarding rowers only using the calories of a chocolate bar during a race - completely missing the point that they train constantly for the race - is laughably misleading), then spends a whole chapter giving suggestions for what to do.All in all, this book is simply laid out, and easy to use for those only looking to lose weight. But it is lacking in information for anyone with a genuine need to watch their GI intake, contains many personal sweeping statements and biases, and is frustratingly opaque. For those looking for clear, scientifically based information from which to make decisions, it is not the book to buy.

The Gi Diet
I am in a group that uses this diet method. It is a good, easy to understand diet that emphasizes not eating high glycemic foods that make you hungry in just a few hours. A balanced low-glycemic diet is recommended. All foods are all listed in a RED/YELLOW/GREEN list. It does not list calories, just portions. All dieting is painful, especially at first. Our group of 8 meets once a week (starting Sep 09) and has lost 7.6% of our original weight or 176 pounds toward our initial goal of 10% wt loss. It works and is not a fad diet like most. You must also exercise along with this diet--i.e. walk as much as you can as often as you can. A good book. CB
