Q: Are the platypod spikefeet tsa compliant? meaning, can you take the platypod ultra and its accessories in your carry-on bag?

I think it is a toss up. They aren't really any pointier than a fountain pen, but they are relatively sharp. So I think some TSA agents could get fussy about them, even if they aren't knives and there isn't a strict rule against them. If you can imagine the TSA proudly showing them off in their Twitter feed of confiscated items, then they could well be an issue. I didn't want to risk it so checked them out of an abundance of caution. There are also X-Ray bag checks at many locations, including museums, in Europe, and I used the brass bolts as feet there, too, but I don't know if that was strictly necessary. I now have some round headed 1/4 20 brass bolts with lock nuts I use for feet that I can take on a plane without worrying - the threads are the same as a camera attachment, so they are easy to find at a hardware store.

Q: Does the ultra work with an iPhone?

We use Ultra with our phones all the time! Especially on airplanes. You would need to use a smart phone tripod mount, the same process as mounting a smartphone to a regular tripod.

Q: What accessories do you need to make this functional with a Nikon 7100

The only accessory you need is a tripod ball head with a 3/8 inch-16 socket.

Q: should I be looking at ultra or max with a Nikon Z6 with a Tamron 24-70 g2 and a speedlight?

Get the Max! I have used the ultra with a z6 and 70-200.. it works ok.. the max is much more stable
