Q: can i get the high chroma set in cakes instead of tubes?

Qor is only manufactured in tubes, as a professional studio product..........After saying that, they are now offereing a small (very expensive for the size,) pan set, without pan replacements. You need to refill the pans on your own and use tube colors. Less expensive and far more practical: make your own pan set from the tubes. This is how many professionals do it so that they don't waste paint and/or get air bubbles in the finished pans. Fill the pan 1/3 & tap down, let sit until the paint settles, at least 24 hours. Add another 1/3. Let sit again, another 24 hours or more because the pan is now 2/3 full. Top off. Let sit a week. The paint settles and you still have moist vibrant color. These paints shift less than almost any other I have used in a lifetime of art work. They do work differently than traditional paints because of their binder. Auasol allows the paint to flow expansively. If you want a tight controlled paint use other brands. If you want a paint that responds to your brushwork and explodes in color, use this. Neither way is inferior. It depends on how much you like initial detail or a hyper realistic representation, verses abstract coordination with the organic way watercolors work. Q: Are the paints chalky when dry?

The paints have the same sheen as other quality watercolor paints. I would not call them chalky.

I regularly use my QoR watercolors with lots of different brands with different binders, and I find they work together wonderfully. No issues with any of them. They are significantly more pigmented than your other paints as well, so watch out for that.
