Hours of enjoyment
I am so pleased that I ordered this book. I participate in a lot of "block/square swaps" with various groups on Ravelry.com (if you're a knitter/crocheter/spinner, etc... check it out). The patterns are very unique and appeal to a wide group of people and tastes. Some are very dense while others are more open and lacy. The directions are pretty straight forward and will produce a lovely block. I do use advanced joining techniques like "air crochet" and "invisible join" to further add to the beauty of the squares. There are no hook recommendations and the book assumes (I believe) that you are using worsted weight (4) yarn, so an appropriate hook - depending on your tension - would be an "H" on average, though I usually find myself using an "I."There are a few errors that a more experienced crocheter will spot and be able to work through. Newer crocheters will need to go to the publishers webpage for errata. I believe this book came with a short sheet of errata which I found very helpful. This book is an excellent addition to anyone's crochet library.

good choice for grannies
I enjoy making grannies. They use up yarns and go quickly and are not boring as each one is different. The authors here are very experienced and are known for high quality books and this doesn't disappoint. My own hesitation was that there are only 50 squares and it works out to about 3 times the price of the one for 99 squares which was published in 1998 and still in print here. So if you're looking for something cheaper, this isn't the book. But each square has its own page next to the instructions and the photo in color is large and pretty. Also, there are 4 people who contributed to the book and most of the squares look fairly similar and not all that unusual. Also, the size of the finished square is given and they vary from about 6" to 12" and this is a very useful thing to have. So for anyone like myself who just loves grannies, this book is recommended.

Best of the Squares & Motifs Books
This is by far the best of all the books I have seen on squares, blocks, motifs -- whatever. All the blocks are at least pretty - some are absolutely gorgeous. I've found very few errors in the instructions, and the few I've found are easiy discovered and corrected. I've bought a bunch of squares/motifs books in my day, and most of them have been sold or given away. This one's a keeper.

Lots of color and possibilities for multiple design combinations.
Innovative, I saw one of these new Granny Squares in a catalog, but could not find the pattern. So glad this book came along, the sky is the limit now......so many ways to go... So many afghans to create!Information presented well, color photos inspire creative original ideas.

Not the best book for beginning crocheters
This is a fun book but somewhat frustrating. First, it is nice that the sizes of the finished squares are provided, but there is a big range, from under 7 inches to 12 inches. So if you are thinking to use these to sew together for one afghan, you will need to figure out adaptations, e.g., leaving out or adding rows, or changing stitches for the finishing. Also, I have found several where there are errors in the pattern and/or the instructions don't match the photo--and I have had to rip out rows and use the photo to fix the mistakes. Maybe not a great book for beginners.

50 fabulous Crochet squares
I am a tad disappointed with this book as I expected the squares to be ones I had no previously seen elsewhere but the illustrations and directions are superb. I think this booklet would be much better if there were diagrams included for those who wish to learn to read patterns.
