Science Detective® Beginning

Parents have to sit with their kids to explain each tiny details and ask them questions to make sure they understand the concept of each lesson. I own another book in this series for older grades and wanted this one. I like how this format is better suited for younger students. It really moves the students towards a better understanding of nonfiction reading. Will be very easy to implement with Common Core Standards.

This book will strengthen a child's ability to read science texts/test paragraphs and extract meaning from them, but it is pretty dry stuff. I wouldn't use this book to teach concepts, but rather to review them, or perhaps to supplement another instructional program.The book covers concepts in Physical Science, Life Science, and Earth Science.I recommend "Developing Critical Thinking Skills Through Science", also by the Critical Thinking Company, as a much more interesting investigation of physical science.

Well laid out, and does help with critical thinking, but as others have said, not the most interesting aproach to teaching science. We are using this in our homeschool and use each lesson as a jumping off point to be supplemented with books, brain pop videos, etc, and projects that tie into the subject.

These books are very dull. They should also be advertised as "evolution-based."
