Does it work for short haired dogs?

It works for our two dogs, one is long-haired (husky/Shetland sheepdog mix), one is short-haired (full husky) and LOTS of hair from both, so it should.

Has anyone compared this to the ChomChom roller? If yes, does this perform better or worse?

1000 times better. I have both and only use the Black & Decker one now.

Is this good for carpeted stairs?

Yes, it will definitely work on any carpet. It would of course take more time and more effort than a vacuum, but it really picks up the dog hair in my house. It is 7 1/2 inches wide, so it covers a large area. My white pomeranian sheds long hair, and it cleans it up very well.
