Take a lesson with a true legend of American popular music! This DVD gives us a rare, up-close look into the style and technique of the man who co-wrote and played on all of Chuck Berry's biggest rock 'n' roll hits, including "Back in the USA;" "Memphis, Tennessee;" "Sweet Little Sixteen;" "Roll Over Beethoven;" "Rock & Roll Music;" and Berry's tribute to Johnnie, "Johnny B. Goode." In a conversation with pianist/teacher David Bennett Cohen and guitarist Jimmy Vivino, and backed up by a top New York rhythm section, Johnnie breaks down his songs and grooves for blues piano enthusiasts, giving insights into his musical ideas and the history of rock and blues music. Our unique overhead camera angle provides a clear view of how Johnnie improvises the bass lines, chordal figures and lead parts that have made him so popular among musicians and fans alike. He performs each tune with the band, then patiently plays each one as slowly as possible for the sake of the learning pianist. Johnnie performs and talks about a variety of powerful grooves: boogie woogie; slow blues; rumba rhythm; medium-tempo blues shuffle; rockabilly-style groove and more. Each one will provide many hours of repertoire-building ideas and techniques.

I'm a JJ fan
I worked closely with JJ during the preproduction on Hail Hail Rock n Roll. I can tell you honestly he was a very sweet and gentle man with a keen sense for how boogie piano worked in rock music. This video gives you a unique insider glimpse into Johnnies style (and there won't be any more since unfortunately he has passed on). This disc won't show you exactly HOW to do it but it gives you a look at what his style is and where it came from so you can work with your own music teacher and develop your own version of JJ's playing.Boogie on JJ and good music to all

Enjoy the Jam, Try To Pick Out What You Can
I'd really hoped to get more insight into what Johnnie was playing but they never really slowed it down or broke it down to show, or explain, any of his technique, in fact, they never even mention what key he's playing in at any particular time. Johnnie himself is useless at any type of narration so there is another guy doing most of the talking (is he even a musician?) except when members of Johnnies little group pipe in. Yeah group, Johnnie is doing most of his playing accompanied by a drummer, bassist and guitarist which, although they are great players and it sounds good, is hardly the proper platform for any type of instructional video! It's great to watch Johnnie play, he's amazing for sure, but I'd hoped to get instructional value from this. Maybe with some repeated plays I'll be able to pick some of it apart.

great
If you want to get the sound of blues and early rock n' roll on the piano, Johnnie Johnson is the one to go. Johnnie is hugely under-appreciated. He's so down to earth, he patiently plays the tunes slow to show people how it's done. I find the several pages of sheet music really helpful. Couldn't believe the sound I was getting, it's really great. You also get an appreciation of the intuitive nature of this kinda of music and the greatness of Johnnie

Blues/Rock Piano of Johnnie Johnson
I love this DVD, and have played it a number of times and will in the future as I try to learn Johnnie Johnsons approach to piano.I've found it impossible to buy music scores of Johnnie Johnson piano. This DVD came with 20 pages of music as an added bonus. The DVD was delivered to me in Australia within two weeks.Excellant value for money for any one interested in this type of piano blues as it evolved into Rock and Roll.

Poor production results in minimal learning
Unfortunately, this Homespun vid fell below expectations. Other products had much better camera views and repeated licks so they could be learned. This one had a slanted view of the keyboard, very little instruction and as a result, I was very disappointed.

Johnnie Johnson is Rock & Roll
Johnnie was Chuck Berry's piano player for years, Chuck pretty much copied Johnnie on his guitar and made a bunch of money. This is another DVD from Homespun. I bought Dr John's 2 DVD set. It is the benchmark now for all these instructional DVD's I seem to be accumulating.Dr. John plays solo, Johnnie has a back up band. The sound on this video is good, the band is too loud in some spots. What it horrible is the camera work. In Dr. John's DVD's the camera is fixed above his head, you get optimal view of both hands. The camera guy for Johnnie is all over the place, creating angles and missing the second hand, or both hands way too much, also, when Johnnie is cooking, I don't care what the other players look like, let me see his hands!!! Too much time spent wandering around the room. The included booklet is too small and has lame transcriptions (all the homespun dvd's come with this). I gave it a 5 rating because of Johnnie, the man is an American Music Icon and $20 is a bargain to watch him play up close.

Masterful
Johnnie was the man behind the man who created rock and roll. Some say that he was really THE man....I'm one of them.

Very disappointing DVD from Johnnie Johnson
I was very disappointed with this DVD. I had hoped to improve my piano playing by watching the man who is often credited with helping to form the Chuck Berry style of music. Homespun DVDs I have bought in the past have been worth the money, but this one doesn't cut the mustard. The fault lies not with JJ who does what the interviewer tells him to do, but the camera work too often cuts away from the piano or is shown side on, not from above as an instruction DVD should be, and the chords and playing technique are not explained well at all. Two stars only.

Great.
If you're a fan, an absolute must, great to watch him play and very helpful, but... you need to be able to play to make use if it.

Ein echt toll Rock and Roll Piano Video. Teils etwas unstetige Kameraführung, jedoch man erkennt alles.
