Manet's work in an inexpensive package
As a great fan of Impressionism, I've used their work to teach myself painting and have used Manet's work to teach others. Although it is not a coffee table art book, it gives a complete view of his work, A wonderful inexpensive book for those of us on a limited budget and great for the children too to get a taste of great art.

A good overall introduction to the artist's life and work.
Like other books in the Lorenz series on artists (I have read those on Gauguin and Cézanne), this book is certainly good value. It places Manet's life and art in his time and place - mid-19th century France, rocked by revolution and wars. It also tracks his oddly slow emergence as an artist. Manet was a 'reluctant revolutionary' as a painter. He kept trying to win acceptance at the Salon, a deeply conservative institution. Hisrelationships with other painters, notably Degas and Monet, are interesting, as are those with writers such as Baudelaire and Zola. Revealing details on his personal life, especially his many female friends and his mistresses - he was a man who loved women but he treated them unusually well for the time - add more than just gossip, for Manet's female portraits are among his finest works. This makes the biographical first half of the book very useful. There is a problem in the Gallery section, however. There are simply too many paintings reproduced (sometimes more than once), which gives a cluttered effect. And it means there isn't enough space to display larger works as fully as they deserve.

Excellent book
The series of art books "Life and Work in 500 Images" is very well done, good color plates, and reasonable prices. I have Manet, Renoir, and Rubens so far and highly recommend them all.
