Why Did I Not Get This A Long Time Ago?????
This is a great product and please bear with me - first time doing a video and this type of product review but felt this one was worth it! I got this because health reasons require a change of diet and food preparation and although I love cooking I hate the preparation. So, being told vegetables and fruits (heavy on the FRESH vegetables) would now be playing a big part in my life did not make me happy. I can't tell you what exactly made me settle on the Mueller product but 4.9 out of 5 stars tells you I am happy I did - we will get to the .1 in a minute. This product is wonderful - the video is not great and probably my first and last as I suck at it, I didn't even show the product up front, but it is the Mueller Onion Chopper Pro, don't know why they call it that because it chops EVERYTHING! I was standing in the video, but during this entire session which was a little under two hours, I washed and prepared a 3 lb bag of onions, a 3 lb bag of carrots, 2 large heads of celery, 2 large green peppers, 1 large red pepper, and 1 large orange pepper. I wasn't sure how small I needed to cut the pieces, so I tried to size them to fit the opening of the cutter blade. Yes, you do have to do some preparation, but all that small dicing and cutting is gone forever and that is what I hated. I thought if I could take an hour or so at the beginning of the week and get all the vegetables cut that would save at least 20 minutes of prep time per meal. In the end, I have enough vegetables for at least 2 weeks, not 1. I will be adding white potatoes and sweet potatoes soon, but need to do some research on how best to preserve them. This product is a lifesaver. The picture does not show an additional package of mixed peppers, another package of onions, and another package of carrots and celery mixed, all this was done at one time - I am truly amazed with this product. Now, let's talk about safety. They give you ample warnings. Remember one size of the blade is very, very sharp. My only complaint about this product and it could be my fault that I didn't figure it out is there was no way to store the blades within the container - that is my -.1. The product is easy to use, very sturdily built, easy to clean, and does not take a huge amount of strength to use. After the video, I was sitting down except to cut the top part of a couple of large carrots. It does not say it is okay to sit down. I am older and have a problem standing. I was seated at a regular, sturdy table with the product placed on the table and I was seated correctly. I very easily used the product with no problem, so I say for us "oldies, but goodies" this is a great product or for those who have a problem standing and have put off cooking because of food preparation - go for it, but be sensible. Great product, make it your next buy!

A good mandoline with a lot of options, but has some drawbacks
This mandolin is phenomenal. I have 3 of the Swissmar Borner mandolins that are much more expensive. The reason that I have 3 of them is that each has options the others don't have. This mandolin covers the cutting options of the 3 Borner mandolins and then some. Both have German blades and are manufactured in Germany. So they are comparable in this aspect. Some of the things I love about this set are: - it includes a waffle cutting blade that I had bought separately for the Borner sets - it has two different shredding blades that the other set don't include - the blades are every bit as sharp as the Borner blades - thicknesses of cuts are adjustable which is one reason I had one of the Borner sets - It includes a stand that can be used or not depending on the job. This is not an option on the Borner mandolins - I have all the blades I would ever want without storing multiple sets - The cost of this set is much less than the Swissmar Borner mandolins, but offers many more options So far, I couldn't be happier with this mandolin, and would highly recommend it. I can't imagine why the Swissmar Borner sets cost so much more unless it it just because of publicity. UPDATE 8/01/18 I bought this mandoline in Feb. 2017, and have used it periodically as needed. This year, I have been using it a lot more for slicing veggies, such as beets, zucchini, squash, etc., that we buy from local farmers. At this time of year, we buy a lot of these veggies that I blanch, package, and freeze for the winter. Although I still love all of the options for cutting vegetables offered by this mandoline, there is one thing I don't like about it that isn't included in the product page description. I have added pictures to this review to illustrate what I will attempt to describe here. On the top of the mandoline, there are slots that you can adjust blades to come through for julienne cutting (Pic #1). The blades you can choose provide two different widths for julienne cutting (Pics #2 & #3). Under the mandoline, there is a cover you can open for cleaning that covers the blades so you don't get cut on exposed blades (Pic #4). When the cover is opened, the blades are exposed for cleaning (Pic #5). I can see where it would be necessary to open the blade cover to clean the blades when you use them for julienne cutting. What i don't like is that this area must be cleaned even if you are using only the slicing blades since the juices and particles from what you are slicing go into the slots on the top of the mandoline. The blades under the mandoline are very sharp, and the slots on top are not often easy to clean. Although I do still like the many options available for this mandoline, I am tempted to buy a mandoline that would be strictly for slicing and easier to clean. One other feature that I very much like is that this mandoline was designed to fit securely over bowls or pots of different sizes so that you can slice directly into a vessel. This can eliminate a lot of mess especially when slicing something like beets. As for the cleaning problem with food getting into the julienne blade area, I fold a paper towel and slide it under slots of the base and above the julienne blades. Any juices that go through the base unit slots are absorbed by the paper towel which spares me having to clean the julienne blades every time I slice foods. All in all, I am still loving this mandoline.

Works smoothly except for long direction slicing like zucchini
I had another brand of mandolin slicer when working in Canada that I had to leave behind. This works as well or better than that with the exception of long slicing vegetables like zuchinni. One thing I use this for is making low carb zucchini lasagna. The other slicer had a recess in the top holder to use with cyclindrical vegetables on their side that allowed the pins to grabe the vegetables. This is flat across and the grid on the pusher does not engage the food and grip it. I had to use my thumb to push on the end of the food carefully and towards the end pull the remaining portion through. I did not want to add any of my protein to the meal... Other than that, it works great and will fit over some bowls. I wish they would make a bowl designed for this. Especially the long slices do not go into the bowl well as they hit the end of the bowl while slicing. Other foods work well. Mincing or dicing foods such as onions goes easily and one trick I use on items I want to dice is to make some cross cuts in the food so that the ends are not long strips. This is the same for all of these slicers, not just Mueller. Once that is done the dicing goes smoothly. Cleaning is easy except for the thin notches in the bed where the built in knives come up. You need a small bush to reach in there, but that cleans it up quickly. Nice unit.

Slice and Julienne in seconds, and it grates and shreds as well
I have purchased many mandoline slicers in the past, and I know what I like. I have spent significantly more on nicer ones with replaceable blades, more exact slices, etc. But I really needed a good mandoline slicer that does a bit more than slice in one size. I have heard good things about the Mueller V-Pro 5 (as well as other products they make) from other chefs, so I decided to buy this one. I needed the following out of my slicer. - Adjustable slice thickness (this can slice paper thin to a respectable thickness to a bit over 1/3") - Julienne/Alumette/French cut as well as straight slicing Added bonus - Wavy cut (ridges) - Grates - Juliennes in two sizes (there are blades underneath the slicing deck that you can rotate and lock into place) - Case for the blades This one is simply the best in its class, nothing in this price range will come close. It is very sharp, both the 5 insert blades, as well as the deck blades for Julienning tucked into the bottom of the deck. Using the product, I love how it slices the vegetables very thin, especially onions for bagels, lox and cream cheese, or tomatoes for a thin slices in a burger, but the best of all, it can slice it almost paper thin. Great for like slicing cucumbers for sunomono. The Julienne slices can be perfect for stuffing vegetables in a spring roll, or for making various slaws. The grater is fantastic as well. One thing I will also like to note is the blades are very sharp. I would use this tool with caution if you have not used a madoline slicer in the past, and make sure to use the food holder and guard. I have used so many in the past, I am used to it, and I know when to stop, so I haven't used the food holder and guard. This is one of the best kitchen products that I have purchased recently, and I highly recommend this to everyone I know that loves to cook. Makes cooking a lot easier and faster (try julienning 5 kinds of vegetables for a dish), and cleaning this tool is very easy and fast too. Sure, I can julienne and make pretty flower shaped or rose petals out of carrots or make a fish net out of daikon radish just using a knife, but you know, when you want to cook a meal in 30 minutes, nothing beats a great tool. If you are looking to shortcut your cooking time, this tool is must buy for most use cases.

Where have you been all my life? Love at first use!
I have to be honest, I purchased this months ago and forgot about it but today, I was making a recipe with lots of ingredients that needed chopping and I saw this sitting on my shelf and was like, I think I will try that out! So I dusted the box off and opened the box, rinsed all the pieces, dried them off, and was ready to go! The first ingredient needed was 2 cups celery, so I cut off the ends, cut the celery into two-inch pieces, put the pieces in the chopper, and pushed down the chopper lid, and Presto, perfectly diced celery cubes! I'm in LOVE, Love at first use, this device/chopper is a wonderful gadget that makes your life so much easier! From then on, I got a rhythm going and it was chop, dice, chop, dice. Before I knew it I had chopped 2 cups worth of three other ingredients, but this chopper made it such an easy task! The design of this chopper is perfect, I love how easy to clean it is, how easy it is to transition from one ingredient to the next, and the way the blades pop securely into place. This chopper is such a time saver and makes an otherwise labor-intensive task, EASY! Great work Mueller and Thank you for this Awesome Chopper!

Good product, easy to use, sturdy and well designed. Very much worth it.
Picked this up to slice veggies and fruit for use in my food dehydrator. It slices well (careful, blades are sharp), especially the softer fruits (apples, oranges only so far) but with harder things like Carrots the force needed to get thru the blades tends to throw the slices around a little from underneath. I'm sure a shallow bowl or something would mitigate that. Also I would suggest some cut proof gloves as the holder/guide doesn't work well with certain things, like carrots for example. Other than that, I'm happy with the product and glad I purchased it. I can slice fast or consistent, but not both and consistent is important when dehydrating. So rather than taking 30 min to slice up a bag of carrots, apples, pears and oranges, I just used this. While the body of it IS plastic, it's sturdy and not cheaply made. There isn't much wobble back side to side due to the location and height of the legs so it was comfortable to use and didn't even shift around all that much as I was slicing. I had one a long time ago that was pretty cheap and wobbled all over the place, it also wasn't a V blade but rather just a / type. The dial is easy to use to adjust thickness, but I've not used any of the attachments yet so I'm not sure how easy they are to change. I do like the fact that they come in a little box, the cheap one I purchased years ago didn't and the blades were just left to rattle around in whatever drawer I dumped them in. All in all, for the price, it's a great product.

3 Major Flaws -and- a few other minor annoyances.
Pro's: It was sharp and easily cut soft veggies, such as onion, cucumber, etc., its legs were sturdy and the rubberized feet were great, (so it didn't slide around), and it had a wide cutting surface. There were 3 MAJOR Cons for me: 1- While slicing potatoes, (for homemade chips), the size selector would NOT stay on the 1mm setting and with each swipe of the potato, the selector incrementally increased in size and eventually stopped around the 3mm setting, which I consider too thick for chips. However, the 1mm setting didn't move when cutting softer veggies, such as onions. There is no lock feature on any of the 'slicing' sizes, but the 2 julienne settings stay locked in place. 2- Removing the slicer/julienne blade was easy but reinserting it after cleaning was a pain in the butt. At the far end of that removable piece, there's a small protruding nodule, and if you don't get that nodule precisely lined up with the hole on the side of the mandoline, or miss it altogether, (which I did the 1st time), then that piece gets stuck and can't be forcibly popped back out without damaging that part and/or cutting yourself. Also, if forced, that plastic part would probably break! Instead, remove the back cover, (on underside, which has 3 tiny Phillips head screws), and gently pry that piece out with a butter knife or something similar. Not getting that nodule properly aligned with the hole will probably be a problem for some people. 3- The vegetable 'pusher' is wide and does a good job covering the width of the mandoline, however the pusher leaves a good bit of leftover veggie waste at the end of the cutting process due to the gap between the end of the pusher & the base of mandoline. The amount of veggie waste ranged from a 1/4" to 1/2" in thickness. Minor annoyances were: Although the folding legs lock into the open position, they don't lock into the closed position and will flop open unless held closed. A simple latching mechanism would be nice. I can foresee newbies having problems with the 'orientation' of the veggie pusher. It's designed to only go 1 way but can easily be turned the wrong way, and novices might not realize this. Yes, the pusher has places for thumb/fingers, and there are flanges on the top & bottom to help protect fingers if they slip, and it also has directional arrows which are meant for the up & down direction. Mueller could help the newbies by adding the words top/bottom or up/down alongside the arrows, otherwise some folks may incorrectly place it in the wrong (left/right) position... which would cut the plastic side guards on the underside of plunger. It's not rocket science, but a little extra labeling and directions would help the beginners. Lastly, it would be more user friendly if the 'print' or 'labeling' on the removable sizer/slicing/julienne piece was written around the perimeter of the dial instead of on the end. Since it's on the end of dial, one must either pick up the mandoline to read the options/sizes -or- stoop down to counter level to see the print. That was only a minor annoyance, but could easily be remedied. A few simple redesigned fixes would turn this so-so mandoline into a pretty decent one and also be a major help for beginners.

Smaller than expected but worked.
My first impression on seeing the product package was, “Wow, this thing is smaller than I thought.” After taking it out of the package it was, “Yep, pretty small, not going to do much onions with this.” I have now processed over 50 lbs. of onions over the last few days. So, I think I have enough experience to do a review worth something. My first recommendation is that if you are going to chop up a couple of onions for a meal, not to use this. While cleaning is not that hard, by the time you get it cleaned up, you could have simply chopped the onions with a good knife. The second thing is not to expect to chop a medium to large whole onion at one time. Won’t happen. I have a small garden and the reason I purchased this chopper was to process some onions to freeze. Before, I used a food processor and it pretty much just turned the onions to mush and they froze solid like a brick. I wanted something that would be more consistent and not create so much onion juice. I was not too sure this would work for me though. The finer blade seemed like it would cut the chunks a little too big. I definitely thought this was going to take a lot longer than expected because of how small it was. My first task was to figure out the best way to get the onions chopped and not just end up as long slices of onions. A little thought behind how an onion was laid out and how the device was going to push the onion through the blade I came up with my plan and stuck to it. You can see the results in the pictures I have attached to the review. Now for some details. Let’s take an onion. One of my typical onions is about 3-4 inches as in the pic with the ruler and onion. After the onion is peeled, you can see that it is a little large to go through the chopper whole. I cut the top and bottom off the onion, then cut down the middle. Laying the two ends flat I quartered each half. I found that placing a quarter chunk on the blades as shown would produce consistent chunks as can be seen by the pic with the chopped onion next to a ruler. The chunk size turns out to be just about the right size for cooking. Using this process, I peeled, cleaned, cut, and chopped about 20 lbs. of onions in about 3 hours this session. Cleanly cut the onions and extraordinarily little juice at all. Some onions are tougher than others. These may take a little more downward pressure than others. Do not try to use too big of chunks in the device. Keep them the size shown for best results. I quartered about 6-8 onions at a time and then used the device to chop them. The container that the onions fall in is small and does not take long to fill up. However, it was easy to just remove the top part and empty the onion into a bowl and continue. The bottom container is very clear and has 4 small rubber feet that does a good job of keeping it from sliding around on the table. I was not too sure how it would hold up. Except for the actual blades, it is all plastic. The blade and pusher part were easy to put in. The plastic seems to be very hard and showed no wear at all after all of these onions. Blade still seems to be sharp. It was easy to take apart to clean. The main section was easy to just rinse off. The blade section was also handled by just rinsing. The “pusher” section took a little more effort to clean. Even though they supplied a little brush to help get between the crevices, it was easier to simply soak it in water and then firmly tap the section against something solid to knock out all of the bit and pieces of onion that was lodge in between. Nothing to rust so I just dabbed off the excess water and packed away for the next time. Overall, it chopped consistent sized chunks. Onions were left in much better shape than a food processor. Even though it could not take too much onion at a time, it really did not take that long. I like the design and the functionality. Seemed durable and well made. I will use it again the next time. I now have peppers to do. I expect these will go just as well. I would love to see a larger stainless-steel device like this for those having to process a lot of onions. As a note, I am just about over a case of COVID-19. While I hope that it is temporary, it left me with literally no smelling capability at all – making doing all these onions a breeze :o) I would definitely recommend to others.
