I just replaced the gear at the end of april and it just broke at the end of september. i know i did something wrong, but any ideas as to what i did?

The earlier responses are the suggestions I would give not knowing how the gears were installed. If you followed the instructions, you shouldn't have had any problems..

Will this fit a Liftmaster 3850?

I would say that it fits that opener, based on the assembly diagram I saw for the Liftmaster 3850 and the similarity of that to the belt drive openers I have (Craftsman brand is what I have).
