Not for the faint hearted
I bought the standard edition on the release date. And I never had so much fun with a game in the GTA series since Vice City. GTA3 and 4 don't come close. The single player is well done. It's a satire of the post 9/11 and the post financial meltdown age. Or better: it's a kick in the balls. If you do not like what you see in the mirror, just close your eyes and don't buy this game. What happened in real life in the name of protecting our freedom was far worse. The single player is over very quick. Were the game truly shines is the online multi player. Although at the lower levels, online virtual life can be difficult. At first you lack fire power and financial resources of high level players. High paying missions unlock after you reach a high player level. Online virtual goods are sometimes ridiculously expensive. Also R* steadily decreased the payout of missions, to the point that you spent more GTA$ on bullets than the mission payout. But that is the way the business model works. Up to now all downloadable content is free. So R* reaches the maximum amount of players, who don't have the cash to buy the new virtual goodies. So a lot of people buy GTA$ with Xbox or PS3 gift cards. Or cheat. R* had to spent more resources on plugging holes, than on new content. And it is very annoying to loose your super car worth 1,5 million GTA$. Or that you have to pay for the insurance of your super car if some looser is camping outside your apartment with a tank. Or that you get shot in your own garage. All these fixes delay the release of content that is worthwhile: The ability to own multiple garages, heist missions or the casino games. All these drawbacks are made good by the fact that you can be whatever you want to be online. You can do whatever you want to do. You can live the virtual high life. It is not as good in golf as Tiger Woods or in racing as Grand Tourismo or in shooting as Call of Duty. But GTA 5 combines it all masterfully in one game. Pushing the hardware limits of the PS3 / Xbox 360 to its limits. Keep in mind that other games charge you real life $10 for each DLC. GTA 5 is not perfect, but it comes damn close. Why I bought the collectors edition and sold the standard edition? Just for one car: the Hotknife. It is modelled after ZZ-Top's Eliminator. It is so much fun to have, because it is made of 100% Unobtainium. You need the collectors edition code voucher to get it. Beware, the code on the voucher is single use. So if you buy the collectors edition second hand, the code may not work.

Huge step forward...but also a few steps back.
GTA 5 is certainly an interesting game, it has taken many leaps when it comes to games design. Ovbiously is the large size of the open world. It is huge and it is immensely details which is fantastic. The missions are varied and entertaining and the character development is far better than that of some blockbuster films...like avatar - who cares for the blue people...no one since you never got to know them much. My point is that the skin of the game has been tattooed to hell to bronze look like gold. However, and this is where for me the game just lets you down:1. Cars, planes and boats have a slower feeling to them, whether that is true i honestly don't know, just when you are racing down the street at full speed it feels like a bus. When you are wizzing around the air or even taking off on the runway it feels like you are going no faster than a normal car.2. The combat system is terrible - Rockstar did say they would try to take the auto-aim system out of it...and i agree GTA4 was just a lock on and fill with lead, BUT if you are going to do that don't make the AI auto-aim you...before you can aim on a guy 90% of your health is already gone. Not to mention that the AI move around like grasshoppers. Again it would be perfectly fine if the AI did not hit you 100% of the time.3. movement - this is a general problem with GTA games but for me it feels it has no improved over GTA4. The characters feels like they have concrete for shoes and they always always get clipped with the scenery around them. ESPECIALLY if you are trying to navigate through doors and very tight spaces.4. THE POLICE SYSTEM IS TERRIBLE!! I personally think they nailed it in GTA4 however they went and changed it again, this time it is a 3 teir system. Firstly you have to escape the scene of the crime (which is never defined...so you just run/drive/swim/fly as fast as you can in a single direction) Then you have to escape the sight of the cops. Thirdly you have to avoid their line of sights once you have escaped their line of sight for the 1st time. (it turns into a metal gear solid 2 style game then. The major problem is that to do this (even on 1 star) it takes nearly 30-60seconds to evade cops (this is at high speed) which believe it or not means you will have driven around 33% of the map...very frustrating if you have to go back to the center of it all.5. Flying...GTA San Andreas nailed flying in my opinion, yeah ok it was not that realistic but its a game! Here even if you have the BEST POSSIBLE flying skill you seem to run into turbulence every second (turbulence makes your plane wobble to the point where it changes direction). The turbulence isn't so bad on planes but on helicopters it feels like trying to fly loose water (i.e. it goes absolutely everywhere!) Helicopters are horrible to fly in this game unlike ALL of their predecessors.6. Car accidents - you have 1 single accident and your car is unusable, now yeah ok that is realistic blah blah blah...but its a game and when you are trying to escape the police...you plough into one car or a fence...and then you have to ditch your car it makes escaping the police 100% impossible without having to shoot the ones chasing you (because they will kill you in a few shots and since you are on foot you have to defend yourself somehow) this just increases the wanted level and you are back to square one.So there are my main criticisms about the game. 1.driving feel, 2. combat system (i really really hate it), 3. movements 4. police evasion system. After that there are small things like no fuel tank caps on the car...so you no longer can shoot a car and it will be a guaranteed explosion (granted in real life this does not happen but its a game) but i would ignore those that's just being picky.Everything else about the game seems near perfect and i highly recommend people to buy it despite the massive problems i have listed above it is still worth the experience once at least. The way they integrate the characters and develop them is fantastic and a true masterpiece of script writing. Some of the characters are a little bit OTT (over the top) but it happens in most games and films. The below is just for those who are new to GTA and are unused to the language and scenes in Rockstar games. There are some scenes where it is strongly advised not to let young people (definitely not under 16) to see because even for me...it raised my eyebrows and i muttered the words 'Rockstar have certainly pushed it this time' however if you are very familiar with the previous games this one only ever so slightly raises the bar in terms of 'bad' content. Oh and the swearing is nearly every 2nd word in all sentences with a few characters so don't have the volume too high. Finally the product. I paid just over £85 for this and yeah maybe it isnt value for money in terms of material you get, HOWEVER because iam a huge fan of GTA and Rockstar i didnt mind paying the price tag at all. You get a key and chain, hat (quite good quality, have to be honest) and a small bag (probably usefull for carying your toiletries such as a shaver (its that kinda size). Ontop of that you get some DLC and a lithography map of the playable map which is really nice you also get a 2nd map in the game. Finally the game comes in a metalic case with some artwork of the main characters. All in All its a very very good game but some of the stuff like combat, flying and other stuff which they nailed in previous games has kinda gone down hill a little in this one. Asides from that it is a near perfect game.3/5 for the fun (because the combat and police evasion plays a HUGE part and you can get quite miffed by it especially the combat.4/5 because overall its a near perfect game but looses one start for the aforementioned problems.
