I enjoyed this film shot in Japan, one of my favourite countries. Great action.

STUNNING! Having been a fan of Marvel, Dark Horse, 2000AD etc for many years and collecting the films also, I was thinking this would be a bit of a disappointment as I heard people saying it was rather average especially compared to the other X-MEN type films. How more could they be wrong. The first 20 mins captivated me, and I knew I was watching a masterpiece of a movie. The acting, script, flow of story is just superb and also has a surprisingly refreshing feel. You genuinely feel attached to all of the characters and the direction of the film is just beautiful, with virtually many scenes having an almost Ridley-Scott buttery perfection to it. The action pieces are excellent and are never OTT, by far the most faithful to the comics and most 'believable', one of the highlights being the fight atop of the bullet train. The pacing is really what makes this film, it is neither too fast nor too slow, but just absolutely perfect, with each scene unfolding with a kind of serene rhythm, giving you plenty of time to take in the characters and stunning cinematography and attention to detail. Visually the effects are gorgeous, the bear in the woods being one of the highlights for being so realistic. Hugh Jackman and the other supporting Japanese character actors are just superb, rock-solid and exactly what I wanted to see and hear. The story was nothing outstanding, but it is beautifully realised from the script and certainly keeps you interested. You feel it is building up to something and the ending doesn't disappoint. I was genuinely surprised in a few places! This really is a terribly underrated film, much more enjoyable than the previous Wolverine film and that was a good effort. I place this alongside Oblivion for the most criminally underrated films of the last few years. Excellent Blu-Ray quality, highly recommended!

I received the Blu-ray of The Wolverine today and upon inserting the disc I saw a short "20th Century Fox" logo, followed by a red screen saying"WARNING Your Blu-ray player requires an update in order to play this disc."Naturally, there is no recent firmware update available for the Samsung BD-D5500 that would allow me to play this disc. Now I'm stuck with a nice £15 wolverine-themed coaster until an update enables my player to actually play it, which can take weeks, months or may not even happen at all, because my player is about two years old and more recent products (read: those that are still being sold and make the company money) are being favored when it comes to firmware updates.Why is it so hard to roll out firmware updates among all major manufacturers first (Samsung is co-founder of the whole friggin' Blu-ray standard!) before releasing Blu-ray discs that actually require the respective updates? Why do studios leave paying customers hanging with an unusable product, while other people can enjoy their illegal copies without any such problems?Here is another theory: do studios make the whole Blu-ray standard more inconvenient than necessary on purpose in order to promote their HD streaming services that would give them maximum control over their content? After all, there is a code for a Digital HD download in the Blu-ray box that would allow me to watch the movie even though the disc doesn't work. Of course I will not be tempted by that offer. I paid for a physical medium and I damn well want to use it. This is making me furious.Just to be clear why I gave this a one star rating: Amazon is an online shop and not a movie site. Because of that I don't just rate the movie but the overall product. If a product doesn't work, not because it's faulty but by deliberate design, it doesn't deserve any other rating. My Blu-ray player is perfectly fine and up-to-date. 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment decided to release a product with changed software routines that some hardware isn't prepared for yet, knowing full well what the consequences would be, and I decided to answer in kind with this review. If other customers don't find the warning that this product might not work on their hardware as well useful, so be it.****UPDATE****I found a solution to the problem. Yesterday I tried watching another movie that is being distributed by Fox Home Entertainment. Never Let Me Go. It greeted me with the same warning to update my player that greeted me when I tried playing the Wolverine Blu-ray. Since Never Let Me Go is from 2010 I suspected that a firmware update might have broken the compatibility with other older Fox titles as well, so I tested Aliens and A Good Day to Die Hard, both of which worked perfectly fine. Being at a loss I tested a pretty outrageous theory that I never would have thought off had'nt an old title like Never Let Me Go given me trouble. I removed my flash drive from the Samsung player and tried again. Suddenly Never Let Me Go worked. Then I tested The Wolverine and to my bafflement it worked as well! So clearly there is some kind of authoring problem going on with certain titles from Fox Home Entertainment that prevents them from working properly as long as a flash drive is attached to the (Samsung) player. How can something like that happen?Anyway, since a little fix like that made it possible to play the disc without having to wait weeks, months or eternity for a firmware update I bumped my rating from 1 star to 4 stars. Otherwise the Blu-ray is well made and the movie is good.

For anyone who enjoyed the Wolverine but hasn't seen the Extended edition cut of this film or the "UNLEASHED EXTENDED EDITION" as they call it, or anyone who hasnt seen the theatrical relese altogether please do yourself a favour and grab a copy of this, you won't be disappointed. There isn't hours of extra footage like say The Lord of the Rings extended editions however in my opinion I feel like this version adds so much more weight to the film and helps to flesh of some scenes and characters. If you were one of those people *SPOILER ALERT* who wasn't happy because Wolverine doesn't really fight any of the ninjas like in the comics, you will hopefully be happy with this cut, I won't spoil it too much for you. There are a few other scenes like this one as well that make you wonder why in God's holy name did they cut this from the movie.There is also an alternative ending to this film that would have been far more entertaining and a really nice nod to the comics if they had used it instead of the rather boring one they ended up sticking with.I thoroughly enjoyed this cut of the movie, give it a try and I'm 99% confident you will feel the same

4.5 stars I'd say. This review is long overdue for me. I enjoyed this movie very much, but more than that, I thought it was a great film. Bryan Singer's X-Men films are breathtaking in their spectacle but this film is equally impressive in its meditative quality. Aside from the action sequences, which are great, and a bit of a wild climax, there is a good bit of downtime in this film during which the film explores Wolverine's struggle with his powers, the cost of those powers, and the meaning of immortality. I don't think the films delves into it as intellectually as it might have, but, by filming it the way he has, James Mangold shows us that the film is a least as concerned with being a story about people and legacy as much as it is with being a "superhero" movie. I have always liked the association of Wolverine with Japan in the comics. It seemed very natural, and I'm glad to see that story translated on film. The theme of Wolverine as a Ronin ties in nicely with the problem Logan has of outliving everyone he may fight for (Yoshiga) or care about (Jean). Lovely storytelling.All in all, I expected this movie to receive better reviews from critics than it did. It's underrated, not just as a Marvel movie, but as a film in general (and Mangold, as usual, continues to be underrated as a director). The movie gets around to one of the seminal events in superhero storytelling--showing us the hero without his powers. The question is, implicitly, is he still a hero? And it allows for an examination of the character's humanity. This was done in Superman II when Superman gives up his powers to be with Lois Lane; it's done in Spider-man 2, wherein we see Peter save a child from a burning building without the benefit of his powers; we saw it in Iron Man 3 when Tony Stark has to improvise an attack without the benefit of his suit; we saw it in The Dark Knight Rises when Bruce Wayne goes broke, and has to see what he's really made of as a man in escaping from the pit. And generally, showing us a superhero without his powers has basically the same effect as planting a fundamental weakness in the hero--eg. Kryptonite for Superman and Water for Bruce Willis's character in Unbreakable. The device works well in The Wolverine as Logan is repeatedly haunted by thoughts of Jean Grey forcing him to wonder if being mortal is really such a bad thing.As I said, I think this film is underrated, and I would in fact place it in the top five superhero films to come out of the genre since the release of X-Men in 2000. In no particular order, I think the top five of the last 15 years are Batman Begins, Spider-man 2, Unbreakable, The Wolverine, and X-Men: Days of Future Past. However, there are a number of others of surprisingly high quality that they could appear on such a list--Captain America: The Winter Soldier, X2: X-Men United, and X-Men: First Class, to name just a few. I continue to be amazed by the quality of Marvel films, since it seems like studio executives will inevitably screw up a good thing by trying to get too involved, thinking they know best (e.g., Superman III, and, recently, Amazing Spider-Man 2). Finally, this review would not be complete without giving props to Hugh Jackman for giving the role and the character such respect, and not playing the character with a big wink of the eye (like Roger Moore did with his James Bond films), just because it's a fantasy story. Overall, an excellent addition to the Marvel film canon.

Nie zuvor haben wir "den" X-Man so verwundbar, so nah und so intensiv erlebt.Auch wenn die Trailer bahnbrechende Action versprechen, so ist der größte Teil des Films eher der Handlung vorbehalten. Die Actionszenen sind gut und packend insziniert. Besonders hervorstechen die atomare Explosion zu Anfang des Film, die Verfolgung durch Tokio mit der Klimax in der Bullet Train Szene, sowie das Finale des Films, das eine unerwartete Wendung bringt, und die gesamte Verschwörung, die sich durch die Handlung zieht vollkommen auf den Kopf stellt.Während andere Superheldenfilme mit CGI nicht geizen, und einen Effekt nach dem anderen Verschleudern, so wirkt WOLVERINE im Vergleich gerade zu minimalistisch. Gerade mal zu Beginn und zum Ende des Films werden Effekte exzessiver verwendet. Ansonsten konzentriert sich der Film auf spektakuläre, reale Actionszenen. Meist sind es Verfolgungsjagden oder Handgemenge, alles mit kaum CGI Zusatz (und wenn überhaupt, dann nur um Logans Heilung zu zeigen). Es ist fast so wie bei den BOURNE Filmen, aber definitiv nicht wie bei den Comicheldenfilmen der letzten Jahre. Was WOLVERINE auch von seinen "Brüdern und Schwestern" unterscheidet. Die Actionszenen haben Sinn! Sie sind nicht irgendwie erdichtet, sondern dienen tatsächlich der Handlung. Konstruierte Plots und Handlungsbrücken sucht man in WOLVERINE vergeblich!Die Darstellerriege überzeugt durch die Bank hinweg:Hugh Jackman spielt Wolverine mit so viel Leidenschaft, wie schon in den Vorgängern... Körperlich ist der 44 jährige in absoluter Topform. Nie zuvor war Wolverine wilder als in diesem Film. Gleichzeitig konnten wir Wolverine nie zuvor so nahe kommen wie jetzt. Wenn der Film endet, will man den Charakter wiedersehen. Glücklicherweise wird man bereits im Mai nächsten Jahres mit dem nächsten X-MEN Film belohnt, in dem Jackman eine prominente Rolle spielen wird.Rila Fukushima spielt Logans Sidekick Yukio. Die toughe Japanerin vermag es fast dem Protagonisten die Show zu stehlen. Fukushima spielt die Rolle mit einer wunderbaren Leichtigkeit. Es macht Spaß ihre Interaktion mit Logan zu sehen.Svetlana Khodchenkova spielt Viper. Eine verschlagene, hinterlistige Mutantin, die immun gegen alle möglichen Gifte ist. Ein Vamp, der nicht davor zurückscheut hinterhältige Methoden zu nutzen um an ihre Ziele zu kommen. Die Kälte, die die gebürtige Russin ausstrahlt ist faszinierend. Ihr blüht noch eine große Hollywood-Karriere.Tao Okamoto spielt Mariko, Yashidas Erbin und Logans Schützling. Sie ist ebenfalls eine starke Frau an Logans Seite, die ihn letztlich dazu bringt, sich selbst zu vergeben.Und dann ist das natürlich Famke Janssen, die einmal mehr in die Rolle der Jean Grey schlüpft und Logan als Geist heimsucht. Janssen spiegelt das Trauma des unsterblichen Mutanten wieder. Seine größte Schwäche, sein Bedauern, und seinen sehnlichsten Wunsch: Endlich zu Sterben.Für den Soundtrack zum Film ist Marco Beltrami verantwortlich. "Ost trifft West" trifft die Musik am ehesten. Beltrami nutzt sowohl Elemente des Western (Mundharmonika), wie auch die des Eastern (Harfen, Streicher) und bringt zwei musikalische Stile in Einklang, die eigentlich verschiedener nicht sein könnten. Auch wenn einige Tracks aus STIRB LANGSAM oder WORLD WAR Z stammen könnten, klingt WOLVERINE exotisch genug, um sich von anderen Sommerblockbustern abheben zu können.3D: Der Film wurde ursprünglich in 2D aufgenommen und dann in 3D konvertiert. Dennoch ist das Ergebnis verblüffend. Auch wenn der Film keine Popups hat, so hat das Bild eine immense Raumtiefe, vor allem in der Bullet Train Sequenz, sowie am Ende des Film in dem Yashida Tower sehen die Szenen in 3D hervorragend aus. Eine bessere Konvertierung hat man bis jetzt im Kino nicht zu sehen bekommen.FSK12: Wie von Regisseur James Mangold bereits angekündigt, wird es einen längeren, brutaleren Schnitt der Films auf Blu Ray geben. 10 bis 12 Minuten könnten so das Filmergebnis bereichern. Jedoch auch in der FSK12 Fassung geizt der Film nicht mit Blut. Allein Logans Herz-Szene hätte dafür gesorgt, dass der Film vor 20 Jahren auf dem Index gelandet wäre.Entgegen aller Erwartungen wird der extended Cut NICHT in 3D vorliegen. Das hat den einfachen Hintergrund, dass er auf Veranlassung Mangolds produziert wird, und Mangold selbst kein Fan der 3D Konvertierung war. Dies war eine Idee seitens des Studios um noch etwas mehr an der Kinokasse einzunehmen.Schade: Der Extended Cut erscheint nur in Begleitung mit der 3D Fassung des Films. Zuschauer, die getrost auf 3D verzichten können werden dann trotzdem dazu gezwungen tiefer ins Portmonnaie zu greifen. Vermutlich wird später noch eine Auskoplung verkauft werden. Hier hätte man dem Zuschauer entgegenkommen können.WOLVERINE ist anders. Kein IRON MAN, kein MAN OF STEEL. Im finalen Endkampf geht keine Stadt zu Bruch, und die Handlung dient in WOLVERINE tatsächlich der Geschichte und den Charaktere, nicht wie in anderen Filmen als Brücke zwischen den CGI-lastigen Actionszenen. Die Schurken haben keine globalen Motive, sind nicht die typischen größenwahnsinnigen Comic-Bösewichter. Es geht nicht um tausende von Leben, die in krachenden CGI-Explosionen bedroht werden...In einer Zeit in der Comic-Buch-basierte Filme immer höher zielen. Immer mehr Leben auf dem Spiel stehen, immer mehr Städte vernichtet werden, zielt THE WOLVERINE mehr als niedrig. Nur WOLVERINEs Leben steht hier auf dem Spiel. Die intensivste Szene ist somit nicht ein Wolkenkratzer der zu Bruch geht, sondern der Kampf Logans und Yukios gegen Shingen im letzten Drittel des Films. Hier geht es nicht um das Leben Tausender, sondern um das Leben von Zweien. Und allein DAS macht WOLVERINE zu einem der besten Filme seines Genres.Zur Blu-Ray (28.11.2013): Bewertet wird das Steelbook 3D (MM exklusiv):Drei Disks in einem Steelbook mit einem 3D Magnetencover. Das Steelbook ist stabil verarbeitet. Das Motiv ist das Internationale Poster (Wolverine mit dem Katana in der linken Hand vor der Stadtkulisse vor Tokio). Das Set beinhaltet 3 Disks: Die Blu Ray 3d mit der Kinofassung, die Blu Ray 2d mit der Kinofassung und den Special Features und die Blu Ray 2d mit dem exklusiven "Extended Cut".Zur Bildqualität: Angesichts des aktuellen Herstellungsdatums darf man vom Bild Referenzwerte erwarten und bekommt diese geliefert. Auch wenn der Film zumeist sehr düster gehalten ist, verliert das Bild zu keinem Zeitpunkt an Bildschärfe und Kontrast.Ton: Liegt sowohl in Englisch Dolby Digital HD 7.1 MA vor. In Deutsch müssen wir mit Doly Digital DTS 5.1 leben. Tollen Raumklang mit Referenzcharakter gibt es trotzdem!Extended Cut: Knapp 12 Minuten mehr Filmmaterial! Der Film wirkt ingesamt runder, es profitieren vor allem die Charakterszenen.- Die erste neue Szene ist ein Zwischenschnitt während des Flugs nach Tokio: Logan erinnert sich an seine Zeit auf dem Grund des Brunnens mit dem jungen Yashida kurz nach der Explosion in Nagasaki.- Die zweite neue Szene beinhaltet eine Änderung und Erweiterung des Dialogs zwischen Yukio und Logan auf der Fahrt zum Yashida Anwesen.- Das Gespräch zwischen Yashida und Logan ist wesentlich länger.- Mariko will nach dem Gespräch mit ihrem Großvater mit ihrem Vater sprechen.- Shingen spricht mit Yashida kurz bevor dieser "stirbt".- Während des Funeral Fights gibt es wesentlich mehr Blut zu sehen und einige neue Einstellungen.- Während Logans und Marikos Flucht erschießt Harada einen weiteren Yakuza Schergen auf den Strassen von Tokio.- In dem Liebeshotel kollabiert Logan nicht auf dem Balkon, sondern wird von der Yakuza angegriffen und beinahe erledigt, bevor ihn Mariko zu Hilfe kommt.- Als Logan und Mariko vom Gewitter überrascht ins Haus rennen, gibt Mariko Logan seinen Kimono.- Etwas mehr Blut während des Angriffs des schwarzen Clans auf das Yashida Anwesen.- Als Logan Shingen besiegt hat, nimmt er sich eine Zigarre, die neben dem Wandgemälde des Dorfes liegt.- Logan kämpft gegen den schwarzen Clan und Yukio kommt ihm zur Hilfe (lange neue Sequenz mit teilweise aus den Trailern bekannten Einstellungen).Etwas verwunderlich erscheint indes die Freigabe FSK 12, das es im Extended Cut tatsächlich etwas blutiger zugeht als in der regulären Fassung.Specials: Ein einstündiges Making Of, ein Kinotrailer, ein alternatives Ende und ein kleiner Vorgeschmack auf X-MEN: VERGANGENHEIT IST ZUKUNGT (Mai 2014). Leider etwas spärlich.Der beste Sommerblockbuster 2013 in einem tollen Set. Ein Film der heraussticht aus dem Mainstream, weil er den Mut hat ANDERS zu sein!
