Yes, it does matter if it's in full sun. It won't tell you the air temperature, it will just tell you the temperature of the sunny position which would be a few degrees above the air temperature. You are supposed to put the thermometer in a shady area at the North side of your home. Also, in the summer NEVER have the thermometer in full sun because this will ruin the thermometer's calibration.

Just it just work straight away? Or do I need to do something with it?

I just hung it up. I bought 2, one in garage and one outside of garage. Overcast sunny today here they are reading 18c in garage and 21c outside (located in a sunny area). Seems about right app for the area says expect 18c.

I bought this thermometer in July & it worked fine but just now it is constantly showing a temp of 60F. Has anyone else had this problem?

if you mean what I think you do yes it does im glad I bought it,i have the large one outside my flat door on the wall, and it shows the temperature as dropped in really cold weather and when warmer it rises. I also have smaller ones indoors..
