BOBBY by DIMPLE, PRAN, PREMNATH RISHI KAPOOR

A Bollysploitation Fan's Perspective.
Wet blanket falls for hot chick - parents disaprove - attempted arranged marriage to mentally disabled girl - elopement ensues. This film is notorious for the storming debut of 16 year old leading lady Dimple Kapadia as the thunder thighed Bobby. (Dimple was soon married and a mum not to return to the big screen for 11 years.) Fortunately Dimple is not just slightly dodgy eye candy. She really sets about the role with unabashed gusto and when the dancing starts we're treated to some tremendous 21st century raunch. Talking of raunch, Aruna Irani plays the scene stealing sophisticated-vamp character and gets to dance with unexplained mexicans and african tribesmen.Leading man Rishi Kapoor plays the weedy nerd Raja who, unfathomably, is high society's most eligible bachelor and a total chick magnet. He gets to wear some hidious non-funky 70s fashions until he eventually dons a 68 comeback special black leather combo for the monkey bike ride - very cool.As usual there's never a dull moment - We get a corrupting western disco party, a red neck chase sequence, christians, anti-hunk Rishi Kapoor buck naked, slow death of monkey bike over cliff, Premnath off the leash as Bobby's dad, Pran at his hook-nosed best and, most importantly, Dimple in a bikini. This is a must-see 70s kitch classic. Sound and vision are unusually respectable in the Shemaroo edition I have. Subs are excellent songs included.

Love conquers all!
A poor little rich boy is befriended by a fisherman's daughter, only to fall in love with her, thereby challenging the status-quo of asian society. Little has changed with regards to an age old formula, however the package is continuously modified. This is the '72 version which, if not timeless is still a classic!
