When I purchased mine it said it was "genuine leather inside as well" there is no way that was true - within a couple of months it shredded like plastic and even the outside came away from the stitching. Really strange they used really nice pulls on the zippers that stayed great - such a great design but the quality unless you want to replace every couple of months - could not even donate it - it was just a piece of junk - and assuming from the quality and the mis representation - not leather at all - mine was made in China but felt because it was suppose to be leather it would wear like leather not a synthetic - someone said this design came at a higher price in leather but since the ad said leather went with that - so disappointing

Yes. I was able to put my passport in the zipper compartment and it fit.

Q: Would a check book fit in zipper compartment

I think it would be a tight fit, so wouldn't recommend it.
