Up against a wall, how far would the front edge of the seat extend out from the wall? More than the 14.2 inch seat width?

Yes, it would be more than the seat width because you would have to accommodate the lower frame too. I measured my unit and it is 31" from the back of the metal frame to the front edge of the seat.

On each end of the table/backrest on the bench side is a spring loaded release lever. Lifting the lever allows the table to be switched between positions. It is very easy to operate.
