Is the slide removable?

It's optional, although there will be a small section of missing guard-rail if you opt not to mount it. My kids (9 yo and 4 yo), found the slide to be too steep to really be functional. They both complained that it hurt their butts when they hit the bottom/floor. Also, the slide has two hooks/brackets that rest on the bedframe ad includes a couple bolts to secure it to the frame.
