Sphere[LP]

Stinson’s latest is not for everyone. This is not traditional jazz and some will say it isn’t jazz at all. What it is is often very beautiful reminding me of classical piano of the 19th century. There are other times when the tensions of today dominate. It is a wide range of musical ideas expertly played by a jazz piano trio that is without limits and without peers. This is music that defies category. My highest recommendation for those who appreciate their jazz with a highly European accent.

A bit too polite for my tastes. The compositions and performances could have used more tension.

Excellent performances, wonderful, beautiful interplay between the musicians...the surprise is all of the songs were written by other folk....chill, relaxed, virtuoso explorations from a founding member of the early ecm releases. More melodic than free in song forms.
