I don't see why not. It's just an aaa battery. I have used recharables in a pinch.

It always starts at the lowest setting.

It doesn't look like a small keyring would actually fit thru the small keyring slot. Will a keyring fit in this flashlight?

yes it does, It comes with a tiny key ring. I was able to put it on but I used a toothpick as a guide to open the keyring and slide it on while putting the ligh on behind the toothpick. This way the flashlight slides right on and it doesn't get scratches from tge key ring while assembling it.

Is this made in America?

No, not in America but it is a excellent flashlight!
