I get compliments on these
The walnut of these knife blocks are really beautiful pieces, and have some great character. If you don't have a knife strip already, they are awesome for efficiency, safety and looks. The magnets are very strong except for near the plugs, but even there they can hold a paring knife with ease.A couple notes on installation: - I found that sticking a little bit of double sided carpet tape to the backs helped me align and level them before I drilled the holes. This makes it way easier to install. - The plugs have a slight taper, so make sure you install them the correct direction - The wood comes from the factory just a little dry, especially the end grain. Use a little bit of food grade mineral oil to hydrate them just as you do your cutting boards and knife handles, and it really brings out the character of the wood - In my case, I was mounting to the side of a cabinet instead of a wall. If you're doing the same, a #10 bolt / washer / nut works great. They feel so stable I could do a pull up on them.

Beautiful and functional
I purchased the 20" version after reading all the glowing reviews, and I couldn't be more pleased. The butcher block version looks beautiful and I would imagine it would match with a variety of kitchen styles, given the variety of woods used. Permanent installation couldn't have been easier, but I did hope that I could get away with mounting it without drilling holes into my studs. I tried using 3M Command Strips, the kind you use to mount pictures and that are supposed to hold 6 lbs each, but although they stuck great to my wall (so great, in fact, that it pulled off a chunk of paint, even though I removed them correctly), they wouldn't stick to the knife strip, likely because the wood had been oiled. It stayed up fine when no knives were attached, which I tested for 2 weeks. I then added a pair of kitchen shears for a week, which held fine. Finally, I attached my Wusthoff santoku, and after a few days, I was awoken in the middle of the night to the sound of crashing glass and metal. I was bummed but unsurprised to find that the strip had fallen off the wall, knocked into my glass oil dispenser and there was a mess everywhere. That was on me - I had a feeling it was coming, but I had to test the limits. So, I bit the bullet and mounted it to the studs, which I found using a combination of the old-fashioned knocking method and something I learned in nursing school that I later discovered is excellent for finding studs in the wall with great accuracy (Percussion: place your non-dominant middle and index fingers directly onto the patient’s skin, with your distal interphalangeal joints held firmly against the patient’s chest. Using your dominant middle finger, tap the middle finger of your non-dominant hand (firmly placed on the patient’s chest) at the level of the distal interphalangeal joint. This is best performed by a quick flick of the wrist to achieve a solid strike on the finger). The strip is now mounted very securely to the wall, the big gash left by the Command strip is covered, and all of my knives and scissors are out, except for the one super long Mercer bread knife (purchased here on Amazon) that is too long to fit in the under-cabinet/over backsplash space allotted to my strip. For size reference, I have 2 santokus, a paring knife, and a pair of kitchen shears on the 20" block, and they take up about half of it, so you could easily have several larger knives attached to it without running out of space. Great purchase, if a little expensive.

Secure * Convenient * An inexpensive Answer!
I wanted more counter space, but didn't have wall space either as my cabinets are low. This was 'the ticket'! After researching various options and costs, this met all my criteria....great quality for the price; the magnetism is strong enough to hold my knives and even the sharpening rod securely without having to use 'brute' force or twisting to remove the knives yet holds them securely (it is installed underneath my cabinet so I was VERY concerned about them falling); quite gorgeous too (I "thought" I wanted stainless steel but so glad I got this walnut stained one as it blends well underneath the cabinet so it's barely noticeable yet looks great when you do see it); easy to install (I did have to shorten the screws since it went underneath the cabinet; yet is still secure, doesn't wobble or move at all); perfect size for the depth of my cabinets; visible enough for selecting the knife you want. I was pleased to learn to use the knife's spine when returning it to the bar, then turn the knife gently so it doesn't slam against the bar and let the handle rest against the bar (see the pic) (this will protect the blade's edge from being knicked as it attaches). Great product!

great for my new kitchen
I put a lot of consideration into the design and function of my new kitchen. It is smallish and every space is important. I love the knife strip, it holds a variety of amazing knives that also took me forever to decide upon. This strip not only functional and holds 6 large knives, very well. This strip is a great addition to my kitchen!

not for vertical install
This knife bar is very nice. Dark walnut stain. I was hoping to place my knifes horizontally but the magnet isn't strong enough for that. It works well with the knifes vertically hung.
