Hi Linda, they do get a coat of rust, which brushes off. This isnt the kind of rust that will make the pole brittle, more of an 'oxidisation', if that makes sense. I got mine as supports for a climbing plant and am going to order some more to bend into shape, to make further supports for my giant poppies.

Q: What is the best length to buy? ie what length did Monty Don use on the programme?

I am not sure what lengths Monty Don used. but it really depends on what height plant supports you need. I use 3 metre lengths for large supports and 2 metre lengths for smaller ones. Just bear in mind that a 3 metre length will produce a plant support about 1 metre high and a 2 metre length about 500 -600 cm high. I you want smaller heights you can cut the 3 metre or 2 metre lengths in half before bending. Hope this helps.
