New Author to Me
I had not heard of Roma Tearne before and must confess that the only reason I read this book was because I am taking place in a reading challenge this year and one of the categories was to read a book by someone with the same name as you (my Christian name is Roma). Having said that, I really enjoyed the book and the way in which it is written and I will be reading more of Ms Tearne's books in the future. The characters are believable and the way in which the story is written makes you visualise each scene. If you have not read one of Roma Tearne's books before I can thoroughly recommend doing so.

Perfectly written and evocative
This is the first book I have read by Roma Tearne and it was excellent. A story told through the memories of Cecily, a thirteen year old girl. We learn early on that she is somehow involved in the tragic death of her beautiful and charismatic older sister, Rose.We go back to the hot summer of 1939, and the build up to a tennis party at Palmyra house on the sussex coast. Cecily is envious of Rose but is unaware of the undercurrents in all the relationships around her. Passions and resentments simmer, and Tearne has the reader as muddled as Celia as we try to make sense of what is happening. Set against the background of impending war this has increasing tension. A brilliant story, that captures the mood of that time. One of the best books I have read this past year with the quality of the writing. Poetic and compulsive, and I loved the ending! Highly recommend this

The last pier
An excellent book with a story which has many twists and turns and unexpected outcomesBut is essentially a sad story of two families in the run up to and during the 2nd world war. The sort continues and the conclusion is some twenty eight years later. A brilliant well researched book.

... baffling similes and metaphors which add little to the enjoyment of reading this romantic novel
A book packed full of baffling similes and metaphors which add little to the enjoyment of reading this romantic novel. There is a mystery at the heart of this story of utterly beautiful women falling in love with Italian men which some readers may enjoy. There are a few good descriptive passages.

The Last Pier.
I really enjoyed this book, and the author really seemed to understand the way a young child can misunderstand adult conversations. It was a very good story, and covered topics that I knew very little about, so it was interesting as well as being a good read.

Ultimately a satisfying story
On more than one occasion I nearly gave up with this as it's a very slow burn that doesn't get anywhere fast. It's only because I'd read and enjoyed Brixton Beach, that I continued. It reminded me of "The Go Between" - youthful inquisitiveness and complicity which eventually unravels and causes so much heartache. In this case Cecily blames herself for the death of her sister Rose and what happens next. It takes nearly 29 years and the death of just about everyone involved before she finds out the truth. Set against a backdrop of Britain at the start of WW2 and the suspicions about "aliens".
