The fictional story keeps the book light and relatable, while the second half provides concrete tools for managers to reshape culture and reduce burnout. Man, what a great book! As an avid reader, most books these days seem to follow the same format and many are repeats of the same concepts. Practical wisdom for leaders
This book is a refreshing take on leadership that manages to be both practical and enjoyable. Instead of just listing strategies, it mixes storytelling with actionable advice, making the lessons stick in a very natural way. The fictional narrative helps you see leadership challenges play out, and the second half gives you clear tools to address them in real life. What makes Beyond the Hammer stand out is its focus on people and culture rather than just management tactics. It shows how good leadership is about listening, supporting, and building environments where teams can thrive. The writing is approachable, the lessons are easy to apply, and it’s the kind of book you can return to whenever you need a reminder of what really matters.

Inspiring, actionable advice!
What I love about this book is not only the quality of the information that it gives, which is very high indeed, but the simplicity with which I can absorb the lessons and use them in both my personal and work life. I wanted to read this book because I am starting a new leadership position within my sales team. What Brian so poignantly teaches you here is not something that you have to mull over and over before you can apply it, but rather skills and beliefs that you can immediately put to very good use. The results of using these skills and thought process are equally quick to see. I knew Mr. Gottlieb’s book would help me in business, he has been a mentor to me in the past, and when it come to inspiring people to believe in themselves, there is no one I’d rather learn from. What I did not expect to get from this book was the immediate positive affect it had on relationships in my personal life. The lessons I took from the work not only make a lot of sense in a business setting, they make a lot of sense in my personal relationships, too. As a father, husband, and friend, there is so much to be gained from these lessons. Lastly, the format of the book is genius. The story in the first half is engaging and enjoyable to read. Rather then just giving the reader bullet points and then explaining them clinically, the storytelling aspect shows how the techniques and lessons work in a very believable way. In the second half of the book you get the more analytical nuts and bolts of the practices and beliefs. Put together into one cohesive book it makes for something that is both fun to read and easy to remember and apply. If you consider yourself a leader in any way; at work, at school, at home, on a sports team, or a foreman on a job site, do yourself a favor and read this book. It will change your life for the better, and it will make the people around you better for your presence.

Knowledge like gold to be a good leader!!
I have to say this is one of the best books I’ve ever read on business leadership. I’m a second generation hvac business owner, and this book completely resonates with me. The 5 pillars in the book are like gold to lead any company. They are simple and straightforward, yet very powerful and perfectly align with a culture and system anyone can use to lead their team to success. It’s a very common sense approach, that will absolutely bring about a more streamlined and efficient direction. I highly recommend it to anyone trying to better themselves, in order to better their whole company culture!

Clear and encouraging
I appreciated how the book didn’t judge or blame leaders but instead helped explain why problems happen. Watching George go through his challenges made me feel less alone. The second section gave me practical steps I could use right away. It’s a book I’ll probably read again in the future.

A fresh take on leadership that actually works
I appreciated how the book didn’t try to push some overly complicated system. Instead, it focused on foundational principles that actually matter. The story made the lessons stick in my mind, and the second half showed me exactly how to use them with my team. Since reading it, I’ve seen improvements in morale and consistency. It’s one of the best leadership books I’ve picked up in years.
