5 stars in this price range
I purchased this reel for kayak fishing because I wanted a reel that wouldn’t be too much of a loss if it was lost or broken. I wasn’t expecting a lot but I was pleasantly surprised. This is a lot of reel for the money, I doubt it can be beat in this price range. After 3 times out it’s still perfectly smooth and working perfectly. I love the color, paired with hi vis braid and a hi vis yellow rod it’s a pretty awesome looking rig. I will definitely purchase another kastking reel.

Backlash for days.....
I ordered the seafoam green one for my girlfriend for Christmas, and she bought me the black and green one. They look and feel amazing but after trying 7 different kinds if line, weight and brands. I could never find one that DIDN'T cause it to backlash worse than any reel I've ever used. When it did cast properly, only twice out of ever ten casts maybe, it was fantastic and very smooth. But I could never quite figure it out. Had to have the spool tensioner and braking pretty much fully maxed out just so it wouldn't backlash as bad. Didn't matter if I used small light lures or bigger heavy lures. Nothing I found worked for this reel. Not even kastking's own braided line. Very disappointed. Will never buy a kastking reel again.

Best Bang For Your Buck
I did not know what to really expect when I purchased the green reel. I had a Spartacus Plus but at the time was still learning the setup with having an additional breaking system on it so I also had a Speed Demon which came 4 days later. I put down the plus and was blown away by not having to worry about backlash as those magnets stopped the spool really well. I happen to see the new colors hit the market on the Spartacus colors and they were rated safe for salt water so I gave it a try. I spooled it with 20lb kastking 9 braid and out for a day of fishing out of the kayak. What I realized is these extra breaks allowed me to through lighter feness lures without back lash. Well I had a new rod sitting with no reel I was happy with the green I matched the red with a the new rod and boom. These reels worked so good I picked up my spartacus plus because I figured the setup out on these other two and now I have three reels that can handle just about an lure from small to larger. I through an 8 in Huddleston for weeks and never had a issue with either reel. For the money you wont find anything as good unless its used. Great Job KastKing.

Not sure Yet. **updated** I’m sure now **update II
żRecently purchased for my son. The reel feels good and well made. Spooled with 14lb. mono and paired with a 6'6" fast action rod. Took out a few times and do not seem to get the distance compared to the Royale legend we have. I keep adjusting the brake system and tension knob and does not seem to help. We get the same distance. About 30 yds. I get farther with the Legend. The plus side of this reel is that it does not back lash...…..So any help with recommended braking settings or how to get better distance would be appreciated**UPDATED** 3/19/2019I changed my rating from 3 to 4 stars. After my first review KastKing reached out to me to help me with this reel. I thought this was GREAT customer service. After a handful of emails back and forth trying to sort out my casting issues I decided I wanted the reel replaced. KastKing did not hesitate to send me a new one. After I received a new reel I spooled it up and went fishing. Again it did not cast as far as my KastKing Legend. After a few more emails trying to resolve my concerns we (KastKing & I) decided to give the reel a once over lube job on the reel. After I lubed up the reel I never got a chance to try it because it was now winter and I was just too busy to go fishing.Nice weather, spring, and some free time allowe me to go fishing again. I was eager to try the reel again. I set the tension knob to the spinner bait I had attached and started casting. I usually fish at this one particular tank often so I have a good judge on comparing casting distance. I would to some short casts to hit some cover for fish and everything seemed fine. Then I started some long casts and thought wow, seems to be casting longer than I remembered. Then I remembered I oiled the reel up and thought all was good. A few casts and fish later and all seemed to go back to the bad. I started to fiddle with the brakes and tension knob again. Nothing seemed to really work. I then noticed my line was wrapped on the tip of the rod. I un did the wrap and it casted great again. Then the line got wrapped again. After some inspection I noticed that the line was missed going through the second and third to last eyelets. When the rod was in the normal casting position it was hard to notice. Wellllll that seemed to solve the problem. I gave 4 stars because I did hear a noise during a few casts when I was casting hard when I lost distance. Could have been related to my line wrap problem though.I do find this to be a very good reel and appreciate the customer service. (Thanks Jason) I never got a Birds nest and figured out the distance proplem on the second reel was my fault.Update II *** 3/23/2018 Now gave 5 stars because it worked flawlessly. Windy day distance was great and no backlash. Down wind, upwind, cross wind it didn’t matter the casts were freat

Great braking systems make this a fantastic "first" bait-caster.
I have a Spartacus Plus reel from this company and love it, so I thought I'd get this one for my son's first baitcaster. I had to laugh watching him use it. I remember my first baitcasters. I would most of my time picking out birds nests until I learned how to thumb the reel. First time out, my son set up the different braking systems on the reel and was bombing casts without even touching the spool - no backlashes. So this reel has excellent braking (centrifugal and magnetic) to make casting a lot easier. It is also low profile and super light. So it fits your hand well and won't tire you out after hours of casting and reeling. The price is also amazing when you consider the features.

The competing Spartacus!
I noticed as a reader of several fishing blogs among others reporting reviews of bait casting reels, that the highbrow (expensive; top of the bill) brands, often disappoint on durability; quality of gears and bearings; cheapo plastic details showing as if the were metal etc.). They are question marked in comparison with the more economic brands. I was not especially needing another bait casting reel (I own seven of them in the meantime 😊) , but having read about the properties of the Spartacus and considering some positive reviews on Youtube and having taken cognizance of its specifications, added that the firm Kastking does his utmost to compete with the settled so called "sophisticated" brands, I decided to buy it, especially in order to test and compare it with two of its alikes belonging to the posh Japanese/Scandinavian products. More especially I want the Spartacus to compete with the expensive Shimano Chronarch MGL 151 A XG LH I own ($300.00 category). The thumb bar of the latter is made of a very flimsy piece of plastic with mine I experienced a break off at the place that it is mounted by means of a very tiny screw in a micro plastic tubular screw hole that gave it up even before I reached the waterside with it!I am impressed by the neat body and spool of the Spartacus. The reel and all of its moving parts are extremely smooth and show solid. The drag is excellent. The overall looks of the reel are of a very tasteful dignity. The bolds holding the parts together look good and fit. I gave the reel an internal inspection to add some extra grease and oil here and there because I noticed that the out of the box lubrication was a bit meager. This was quite an easy job. You will find on Youtube enough tutorials how the break down the reel for maintenance. Time will tell how long the gears and bearings will perform. But I have positive hope on that point. Until now I have the impression that the price to quality ratio is outperforming! The product shows craftsmanship and gives confidence. And persuing its objectives to produce at the upper level of the market, the firm Kastking might be awarded as "sophisticated" soon too.I’ll add another review when the reel has shown its abilities, performance and endurance “in the field”.

3 stars due to bail arm return.
I am new to this type of real normally using fixed spool, after setting up the real via a bit of reserch I found with bit of adjustment it cast really well but as we know there is a limit untill the birds nest can start to appear, unfortunately towards the end of the fishing day and one little 25g pollock I found I was 50 percent of the time having to reset the bail arm manually as it did not return on the wind, not the end of the world but not right.

Lovely good value reel.
Lovely little reel. But takes while to get use to this style of fishing. Pretty sure it be better suited to casting heavier lures or baits. Combined with the appropriate casting type rod with the trigger grip.
