Amazing deal
I already owned a QNAP TR-004 and was looking for a TR-002 to match, but it was so ridiculously priced for what is basically just a JMS chipset in a box. The D5-Hybrid cost less than the TR-002 but had the additional 3 M.2 slots which was amazing value for money. Plugged into my Optiplex Micro running Windows 11 24H2 LTSC it worked perfectly. I have connected it over USB-A gen 3.1. It needed a firmware update before it would present SMART data to the OS but since then it has been working flawlessly. I currently have 1x12TB WD Red Plus and 3x SN530 and they are all below 50 degrees C in my server cabinet under load. The speed is comparable to the TR-004 - transferring music from one of the SN530s to the Red Plus runs at a constant 200MB/s. The fan is PWM and is pretty quiet, though if you want to replace it it is an 80x80x25mm model with PWM wiring in standard order (though on a JST-XH header rather than the usual Molex).

Great storage, slow interface with no daisychain.
Lots of options for storage and with my Mac Studio I have it setup in RAID 0, BUT and this is a BIG BUT, it’s interface only allows for Thunderbolt2 speeds or about 1020 MB/sec. Whereas this company’s smaller storage solutions supports speeds of up to 40Gb/sec or 4 times faster. Which doesn’t make sense!! Surely the bigger the storage then the faster the interface. TerraMaster have it the wrong around. Also another ossue is that there is jo daisychaining which I really needed as I have had to spend another £150 on a thunderbolt splitter. That aside, it is easy to setup on MacOS. I have four 2.5” SSDs in RAID 0, and four NVMe SSD’s in RAID 0, and all works perfectly.

Misleading and unreliable
After a year, the SSDs suddenly stopped showing up. The so-called fix? A firmware update that only works on Windows. This product was advertised as a “perfect Mac companion,” but when it fails, Mac users are abandoned. That’s not compatibility — that’s false advertising. Instead of a reliable storage solution, I’m left with expensive e-waste. Avoid this product unless you enjoy being locked out of your own data after 12 months.

Smooth sailing
Just purchased a second one! I just needed a nice box to hold external nvme drives and also have some "old school" bigger drives and this works so smoothly I am very happy. First one has been with me for about 6 months and I haven't lost any data, no hard drive has died or any other issues, so just got another one to use for steam deck game backups. The fan is nice and quiet, the enclosure is sturdy and well built. I have only used it in single drive mode as I don't trust software raid and only ever use raid 5 not sure if this would suffice.

An Interesting Device
This is not a NAS. It attaches to your computer and files are transferred from the computer to the drives stored on the DX8. There is no network connection. The manufacturer’s assume that everybody uses Windows, but the MacOS seems to work flawlessly, formatting RAID drives and writing to and from without problem. It will work without RAID, but lacks the popular RAID 5. The major criticism I have is that there is only one USB 3.2 port on the back and it is thus far slower than it needs to be. A Thunderbolt 4 port would give this the speed it so richly deserves.

No TRIM support
Good as a HD enclosure. But no TRIM support in unraid for the Nvme drives. If that’s important to you then look elsewhere.

Decent enough DAS (not a NAS!!)
I picked this up due to my expanding media requirements, coming from a QNAP 2-Bay Das which served its purpose really well, I simply needed more capacity. Attached to a mini PC with a number of NVMe drives, I wanted a way to combine all of that into one unit, this is a niche ask but the D8 Hybrid kinda fills that need, with some caveats. Firstly, the interface only being 10gbps is a bit of a downer considering the use of NVMe. This doesn't affect me so much as capacity is more important that outright speed, and to be fair, sustained read/writes are good and stable. It would have been considerably better with at least a 40gbps connection. Secondly, the built in RAID only applies to the first 2 drives, so in my opinion and for my use case, this is useless. I simply use it in JBOD mode and manage my drives/volumes in software. Overall, the unit is decently built, if a bit plastic, and for me it works very well though I did swap out the included USB cable for one of my own Anker cables. Price was ok with £60 off, not the cheapest I've seen it at but at full price it would be a no go. Wait for a sale/coupon if you intend on purchasing.

WOW, Just WOW
Anybody working with NAS, knows what a pain backups are. You become a data hoarder and as the data grows the backups take longer and longer. This is a backup solution, I didn't even know I needed. It came up on Amazon search, when I was looking for their F4-424 Pro NAS. I couldn't purchase it fast enough and as soon as it arrived I ordered a second unit - it's that good. Works with your pc directly, works with all brands of NAS, anything that can access USB storeage. Thank you Terramaster!!!
