Good quality agar, long shelf life, but a bit pricey
This review is for "Agar Agar Powder 4oz - Vegan Gelatin Substitute, 100% Pure Agar Thickening Agent for Cooking and Baking, Petri Dishes - Planted-Based Gelatin Stabilize."Good quality of food grade Agar powder which is becoming an essential in our kitchen for all sorts of cooking creations. We will almost certainly be creating a few fungi/bacteria petri dish experiments with this too, once I find a recipe for a good nutrient broth to go with it.The BB date on the product supplied was May 2029, so there is plenty of shelf life if you dont use it often. The price at the time of review was around £10, which at £87 per kg is above average for the market. I'm not sure if that high price level can be sustained. I rate it four stars, just because the value is eroded by the high price point.

Agar Agar Powder 4oz
Very good vegan alternative to gelatin at a reasonable price.

Expensive. Carb content not clear. Not organic? Vegan alternative to pork or beef gelatine.
I have managed to reach the age 0f 82 without ever cooking or eating agar agar, though I have often wondered about it, particularly during the period of my life when I was vegetarian. So, when I saw the opportunity to order it, I was thrilled. Up to just now, I imagined agar agar was identical with carrageenan. Not so, (thank-you, Google). Though both are derived from red algae, those algae are not the same, and the properties of agar agar and carrageenan are rather different. I have been re-assured that in many ways agar agar is superior. One difference in particular will appeal to many: "agar's caloric content is really low, the lowest of all thickeners used on the market". I also read that, unlike most forms of carrageenan, agar agar is not fussy and does not have any special ingredients it must or must not be mixed with for it to work.I am more concerned with carbs than with calories, as for health reasons I follow an extremely low carb / keto diet but I do not need to lose weight. I have found conflicting figures concerning the carb content of agar agar, but as only a few grammes are needed to convert a liquid into a jelly, I am not too worried. All the same, I would have liked to find a breakdown of its nutritional content on the DecorRom store's ad.Agar agar originates in Japan, but like so much else on Amazon, this brand comes from China. Whether it travelled to us from Japan via China, or whether the Chinese took the idea & or the algae from Japan and began producing it themselves, would be nice to know. Some reviewers have complained that this agar agar, though rather expensive, is not organic. But can algae harvested from the sea be considered either organic or non-organic? Only farmed fish (not wild caught) is labelled "organic" (a dead giveaway!) Do algae farms exist, and what undesirable chemicals may be applied in them? Here we get 4oz of the powder (which I read is more challenging to mix without lumps than agar agar flakes) in a nifty container reminiscent of a pepper pot, which matches the pots of other niche edible products from DecorRom. However the pot is plastic. I would have much preferred glass, to minimise harm to my body and the world. For obvious reasons we are not offered Free Returns, so I suggest you shop around on Amazon for a cheaper product, though I fear neither agar agar nor animal gelatine is inexpensive.

Perfectly OK just overpriced
As with many other reviewers I have been using agar agar for when vegetarian or vegan friends come round; it's a fairly basic product and this brand works just as it should - it's one of those things you can't really do too many fancy comparisons with, which leaves you with value for money to consider. Here, things aren't so good. This will cost you £8.76/100g, making it the second most expensive agar agar I can find on Amazon as at review date. You can pick up a 100g pack of organic agar agar for £7.99, non-organic for £5.52, and if you don't mind bulk buying and go for one of the 500g packs, you'll be paying just £3.41/100g.So it's a good product at a bad price; three stars overall.

The Vegan alternative to gelatin that seems odourless and is easy to mix.
The media could not be loaded. I was surprised to find that my wife had never used Agar Agar even though we have enjoyed many home made desserts over the years. The price of around £9.99 for 114 grams seems a little pricey in comparison to gelatine but the product is free from dairy, gluten, yeast, soy, sugar or additives so may be a better dietary alternative. The product comes in a cardboard box with instructions for use and nutritional information which must be retained for future reference as there is nothing on the container itself. This includes the very long Best Before date of May 2029.The white plastic canister is aesthetically pleasing as well as being practical to keep the product dry. A handy twist top revels a sprinkler or a single opening making it easy to dispense the powder.Because we were not familiar with using Agar Agar we had read up online about it’s properties and realised that heat is required to activate the setting properties. The instructions for this DecorRom brand, however, suggest soaking in cold water then dissolving in boiling water so just as for powdered gelatine. This just seems a bit vague regarding the amounts but it is probably down to individual recipes and experience. As a starting point, we used the guide on the box of 10g Agar Agar per Kilo and carefully weighed the ingredients. However, we needed to add more water than anticipated and we were adding a blackberry coulis to the mix which we think may have affected the final set because of the acidity. There is nothing worse than a rubbery texture in a dessert which can happen if too much setting agent is used so we were rather pleased with the resulting soft set on this occasion. There seemed to be no aftertaste and the texture of the dessert was very pleasant.Certainly worth further experiments and it may well replace gelatine in our kitchen so a well-set 5 stars are warranted here.

Vielen Dank.

Anleitung in Deutsch fehlt
