magnet is strong enough to hold it on a floor ...
We have an older 3 level house with one AC zone to control temperature. It takes careful tuning of all the vents and returns to get each room to an even temperature. We were looking for something that could help us adjust flow and return at a minimal cost. We came across this product and decided to give it a try. So we thought these would help as the vents being in a closed position is not enough of a seal. Conceptually the magnetic vent cover would be a great solution. However, the magnet used in this product is strong enough to only hold it on a floor vent. Keep in mind your vent grill does need to be metal as many decorative ones can be made of plastic. We tried putting it on wall vents and on ceiling vents. Neither one worked, the cover would just fall off. It did not work on the return vents either – where the flow should be into the vent as opposed to out of the vent where it would push the cover off. Overall - I do not recommend this product, you are better off just getting a piece of plastic and wrapping around the vent or place something behind to vent to limit flow. I was not given a discounted price or offer for a review of the product. We know how hard it is to assess a product from a picture on a webpage. I hope that the review can help you make an informed purchase.

Pleasantly surprised after having very low expectations.
I bought this product with very low expectations. I read all the reviews that said that the magnet is very weak, and the packaging itself says that it's not meant for ceiling vents. But I had some Amazon credit and decided to give it a shot anyway. After receiving the product, I'm pleasantly surprised. I gave it a try on two ceiling vents and it sticks! Sure, the magnet is very weak, but I guess that if there's enough surface area on the vent, the magnet is just strong enough to hold itself to the vent. It might be worth noting that the vent covers I bought are larger than the vents that I have. My vents are 7"x13", and the covers I bought are 8"x15". I figured that I could cut them down to size and place them inside the vents themselves if they didn't stick.Besides, if you have a bar magnet or a set of neodymium magnets, you can use it to reinforce the vent cover. In my picture, I stuck some magnetic buckyballs to the vent cover for demonstration, but they're not actually required for the cover to stay on the vent itself. If you already have a set of aesthetically pleasing bar magnets or small button magnets, I think these are a very viable solution to covering up vents. I did NOT receive this product at any discount. I paid full price.

Its basically an oversized 'fridge magnet
If you work in an office building, I am sure you can each relate to the vagaries in temperature as you move from zone to zone of the office building/floor. Unfortunately, I share my part of the floor with several people that prefer a temperature usually reserved for storing fine red wines. I was looking for a discrete way to cover the numerous vents in my office without drawing attention to the fix; the last thing I want is for a colleague to come into my office to inquire why I have duct tape hanging covering the vents, or why I have large refrigerator magnets suspended from the ceiling. The MVCX512 does just the trick. They are large (about 5" x 10") white colored magnets. I would rate them higher, but the magnetic backing is not very strong. I have to position the magnets so all airflow is not restricted - just redirected - otherwise I am certain the obstruction created by the magnet would cause them (the magnet) to dislodge. These may not be the perfect application for everyone's use, but may just work for you - or your wine cellar of an office.

Works well, magnet could be a little stronger
These work well for what they are. I, like an idiot, didn't both to measure the size of my floor vents so I have to use two per vent. I don't at all fault the product for this. That being said I do feel the magnet could be a little stronger. My laundry room is exceedingly and unnecessary well cooled, while the rest of my house is not. This is because of two things. First, the air handler is in there and it creates a lovely vacuum sucking all the cool air out of the living and into the laundry room. Second, there is a vent in what could only described as a room the size of closet. I have no idea why someone would put a vent in a room that is only maybe 8 feet by 6 feet and not a room you really spend much time in, but someone did. That being said, I bought these for the sole purpose of covering that pointless floor vent.Because of the vacuum pressure in that room, the floor vent cover literally took flight when I closed the door. I feel that if the magnet was stronger, this would not have happened. All things considered, they work fine in all the other rooms of my house except the one I actually bought them for.

My advice is to take these steps to get a nice tight fit
Purchased these to cover two wall vents, and they work perfectly. The vents both have a lever on the left side to open and close. I obviously have set that to the close position. To make the covers fit perfectly, I aligned their left side with the right edge of the lever, and trimmed the excess inch or so that would have protruded from the right of the vent. I also used an exacto knife to cut a small circle to allow the screw on the right side of the vent to protrude through the cover. This ensures a snug, flush fit. If you don't put these on properly, some air can continue to get through, which is likely why others are complaining that they fall off. My advice is to take these steps to get a nice tight fit. Don't let the other reviews dissuade you -- I wish I had purchased these much earlier. Highly recommended!
