Well-designed and constructed pants for casual, travel, sport or light duty work wear - fractional fittings, and good price
These "tactical pants" are in cargo pants style with the hint of a military or police legacy, and a relaxed-fit slightly tapered leg that allows unrestricted ease of movement. The product photos accurately depict the style. They are well-made, (the four pairs I own are variously marked made in Bangladesh, Cambodia and Vietnam) of light to medium weight rip-stop 65% polyester/35% cotton fabric which appears adequately durable, is very comfortable to wear, and stays fairly smooth after washing. A further advantage of the polyester/cotton blend fabric is that it is less prone than many 100% cotton materials to color fading, or to loss of color dye along pocket, cuff, collar and seam edges, after repeated wear and washing. This is most noticeable in dark colors. The black fabric used by 5.11 stays black longer than any of the very comfortable, but easily faded black full cotton pants and shirts I have owned. The design and construction are good quality, appearing fit for general casual wear, active sports, or light duty workwear. The Modesto CA based manufacturer's website has an interesting explanation of the origin of their brand name, 5.11. It derives from "5.11" a rock climbing difficulty classification in the Yosemite Decimal System of grading walks, hikes and climbs, which - I read elsewhere - stems from a difficulty grading methodology developed by the Sierra Club from the 1930s. 5.11 is or was officially defined in the Yosemite Decimal System as, "After thorough inspection, you conclude this move is obviously impossible; however, occasionally someone actually accomplishes it." It makes sense, looking at this garment, that the manufacturers say their original tactical pants were developed for rock climbing - yet they look stylish enough for general informal wear. Most leg seams are double stitched; knees are double-thickness. The crotch has a large diamond-shape gusset, seeming well designed to reduce potential for active wear to burst seam stitching. There are eight pockets: * Left and right slanted open top front pockets; * Left and right slanted Velcro tab-closed back pockets; * Left and right flap-top Velcro-closed large outer thigh cargo pockets; * One left-side small flap-top Velcro-closed bellows pocket suitable for pistol magazine, cell phone or other such items; and * One right-side open-top narrow pocket the manufacturer describes as a knife pocket. Handy storage for a medium-sized folding knife, pens or similar-size items. The fly closure is a smooth-working brass zipper. The seven belt loops are wide and well reinforced. The waistband is elasticized at the sides. A thoughtful detail of the black version of these pants is that the pocket liners are also in black fabric, instead of the white fabric used for pocket liners of 5.11 khaki pants and even for black pants of some makes. One of the most notable aspects of this product for my requirements is that it is offered in longer than regular leg lengths. My 36x36 size is hard to find in men's casual pants or jeans - typically 36-inch waist pants come only in a 34-inch inner leg measurement. The range of fractional-fitting sizes offered in these pants is exceptional: waist sizes from 28 to 44 inches, with inner leg lengths from 30 to 36 inches. Initially I bought two pairs, one khaki and one black. The price (only $49.45 for khaki and $45.87 for the black when purchased from Amazon) is exceptionally good value for money for such well-made garments. I would certainly buy this style again, or other similar pants from the same 5.11 brand. I really cannot find a fault with the garment design, quality or price, so I have to give it a full five stars. The TDU khaki (a versatile light tan color rather than traditional military khaki) version of these 5.11 pants came to be my favorite during a trip through Europe in the 2012 summer heat. They were lightweight enough to be most comfortable in the heat, to be easily packed, and also to dry quickly after laundering. I ordered another two pairs of the TDU khaki pants from Amazon when I got home. These pants are comfortable and look good with matching colors of 5.11's nylon webbing TDU 1.5 or 1.75-inch belts, and with any colors of 5.11's several styles of shirts, such as the excellent 5.11 #72175 TacLite Professional Long Sleeve Shirt and 5.11 #72157 Cotton Tactical Long Sleeve Shirt . 5.11 nylon webbing belts are especially well-suited to sports and travel wear with these pants because of their comfort, light weight, washability and black plastic friction buckle. Having no metal parts, the belts do not need to be removed to pass through airport metal detectors. Highly recommended to men with similar problems to me in finding fractional-fitting leg lengths in casual, travel, sport or light duty work pants, and to anyone looking for this general style.

Excellent design, lightweight and comfortable.
This kind of pants are very light, with enough room to keep everything in place. One of the front pockets offer plenty of space to hold almost any smartphone. Pockets haves a clever design, in position, shape and size. Strong and redundant stitches are present in every part of it. Reinforcements are present at the knees area and between upper legs space. Mine is sized 38W x32L and fits perfectly, not too tight or loose. I'm able to run without doing much noise because the quality of the fabric. Be advised not to use fabric softeners, bleach or strong soap, i'm using only woolite for dark clothing or dishwasher detergent to clean it (Mine is "Tundra" color. After some washing (5 times) their color remains intact (some navy blue "proppers" fade after only 2 washes). I'm using a BLACKHAWK! CQB/Rigger's Belt which is very thick and wide, no problem to fit my pants. I prefer 5.11, instead of columbia or propper pants, better quality control and a finished piece of work. Note: You can attach some carabiners, keyrings or light holsters to the canvas belt which is located, fixed, over the right side group of pockets. Very useful detail.

Superb Quality, Comfortable and Versatile!
I got these 5.11 Taclite Pros from the recommendation of Nutnfancy on Youtube. He reviewed them and raved about them, so I got a pair and they are outstanding! These pants are very comfortable; not too tight a fit and not too loose. The crotch is also gusseted, and that makes is so much more comfortable than jeans, if you catch my drift. The waist has some "give" in it, which is nice if you maybe fluctuate in weight a bit or need to tuck in a thick polo shirt into them. The knees are reinforced (great feature!) and have slots to put soft knee pads into. I haven't tested that, but a good option to have depending on who you are. The best part of these pants are the pockets. the front slant pockets are deep enough to comfortably hold whatever you might need and they feature a reinforced portion on the edge to clip your knife too (the rear slant pockets have this also). This is a much-appreciated feature, since it will help prevent your pockets from getting shredded by the clip of your knife. I carry my Spyderco Tenacious clipped to the back left slant pocket and it's perfect there, very comfortable, out of the way, yet quick to access if needed. The cargo pockets are also excellent and can carry a wide variety of things. There are also two pockets on the front of the pants: on the right hand side is a knife/magazine pocket which is meant to hold a blade. It's well designed and surprisingly deep (goes down to almost the cargo pocket!). On the left side is a cellphone pocket with a velcro cover tab. I actually carry my cell phone on my belt, so I use this pocket for my Leatherman S2 Juice and it's perfect. My only complaint about the pockets are 1) I'm a lefty so I can't use the knife pocket as it's intended. I'd prefer to see them have twin knife pockets in front rather than the covered cell phone pocket, but that's my personal preference and 2) the back slant pockets are too deep. I tried carrying my wallet in the back slant pocket and it sank down low past my butt and was pushing and hitting into my leg as I walked and was uncomfortable to sit on as well. I solved this by just carrying the wallet in my cargo pocket but I'd like to see the back pockets shallower, more like jeans or standard BDU size (never had this experience w/ my USAF issued uniform trousers). Overall these pants are great for anyone who is a police officer operating in non-uniform clothing, a paramedic or a 'sheepdog' civilian who wants a good pair of pants to carry and organize all the stuff they need (knives, ccw firearm, ammo, flashlight, pepper spray etc). The nice thing about the TacLite Pros is that they will do this without making you stand out too much as a 'prepper' to the sheeple. I wear them around the city and even to the office on casual days and have never received a strange look for them, as you would wearing military camo BDUs in some locales. I also think they would function well as an outdoor/hiking pant, but I haven't tested them in that role yet, and will update the review once I do so. I think these pants represent good value, but not outstanding value. I paid $50 for mine and while that isn't an outlandish price, I'd rather see them around the $40 mark. Also bear in mind you'll need a web belt or other 'tactical' belt to work with these due to the extra wide loops. I got a TDU belt from 5.11 and it's outstanding too, but you have to buy it separately (they're around $20 or so). However, I will say that they are worth the price because the quality and durability I've seen thus far has been outstanding for such a lightweight and breathable, yet strong pair of pants. This is in line with most 5.11 stuff: you may pay a bit more but their gear is well-designed and will last a long time, even under hard use. I highly recommend these pants, the only reason they don't get 5 stars from me is due to the pocket issues I mentioned, but that's not a deal breaker at all. Go buy these, you won't be disappointed!

The pants are great as far as quality goes
The pants are great as far as quality goes. My problem is the fit is bad. I wear a 30/30 in jeans, and these are too baggy and long in that size... I can't go any smaller. The waist is good, my main problem is with the length and overall bagginess, too much material moving around. I prefer slimmer fitting pants. I will not buy again.

Fantastic!!! If you wear Depends.
I have to admit...these provided a good laugh when I put them on. The waist was perfect...the length was perfect. The rest of the pants were HUGE. The crotch went more than half way to my knees (I wish) and the butt area was gigantic. How big do Cambodian's think we are anyway??? If you wear adult briefs give these 5 stars as they would then be a stylish and practical choice.

i really do love these pants
so why 3 stars? ive been waiting 4 yrs (or so) to do this review. these are a great pair of pants.i have tried them all, truspec, propper, etc and through the years have had love hate feelings about all of them. then i found these. and to be honest i still have some bitters to express yet feel these pants are the best so far and are a great place to start for the best design and functionality.ive been wearing these pants for 4+ years and have very few regrets. but considering my experience with these pants i have some very legitimate complaints. let me start of by saying again that these are a great pair of pants! a little about me. im in the low voltage industry, cameras, security systems, access control etc.these pants have served me well and have an unsurpassed pocket configuration. i can carry most all my hand tools comfortably. i also enjoy mountain biking, hiking, shooting, and survival settings. pocket placement and design: the front pockets slant from waist line to hip (as most do) and are deep without being too much that its a strain to reach items. front pocket complaints are that the interior fabric is way too thin and have ripped within as little as 8 months. the pockets have re-enforcement at the top seam for clips on items such as knives, flaslights, etc. the re-enforcement is a too thin and while it helps with wear and tear on the seam it doesnt help at all with the pocket lining itself as the lining is way too thin; mainly on the front pockets. the rear pockets are in contrast perfect! the pocket lining is of the same material as the pant itself and have held up since purchase. the rear pocket also slants from waist to hip meeting the front pocket. excellent design. now items can be clipped in the back pocket and front pocket utilizing less space in either pocket yet keeping item in reach without lifting of your shirt or any real adjustment of hands or elbows. in short you can carry twice the items much more comfortably and within hands reach without much adjustment of the limbs= quick access and deployment. lower thigh pockets are as any other cargo pant would be. nothing much to say here except i feel through the years that the gussetts should be on the side of the pocket as opposed to the front. the reason being is that i have encountered way to many snags and now have pockets with gussets ripped open. so here a side acordian style pocket would have been much better. right leg small utility pocket is genius! have had no problems with this pocket at all. it carries my wire strippers two small tweaker screwdrivers a sharpie and a pen with very little re-arrangement of items to deploy desired object. left cell pocket is also without complaint. i carry a dmt diamond sharpener carmex pocket knife and a pack of gum with no hassle. there is a utility strap above the right rear pocket also ingenious as it keeps my sog muti tool in place and keeps it from being snagged as i crawl thru tight spaces. fabric: i have been thru many pants sporting the rip-stop claims. none of them stopped rips as good as these 511's. my proppers actually wouldnt stop ripping, although they were thinner... some have complained about the fabric not being cool. i live in tucson az, it gets pretty damn hot and even tho i cant say that the pants keep me cool, they really dont heat me up either. dickies pants would get hot and make me sweat, these 511's are great. and also the fabric at the knees is doubled and holds up very well. i have heard that there are padded inserts but im not seeing how that could be as you would have to destitch in order to insert. which brings me to my biggest complaint...... stitching: the stitching sucks!!! within 5 to 6 months of normal wear and wash the stitching will start to come apart. i dont use fabric softener at all. i use a liquid detergent and a dryer sheet. the crotch has completely unravelled on one pair, the pockets have threads randomly snagging on knives and tools. i dont get it. how does this continue to happen? these pants have been around for awhile now. i cant be the only one who noticed. if your product starts to unravel the day u wash them i dont feel you can put the name "tactical" on them. my oldest pair of pants are 1 1/2 years.....i hitchhiked when i was 24, prbably the roughest yrs of my life for a pair of pants to endure, i had a pair of couderoy pants that walked thru 3 yrs of it and i retired them because i got bigger. they were still holding up. skateboarding, drumming, martial arts, tree climbing, foraging for berries, trail blazing, hiking, camping, beer runs!!! but these 511's start to fall apart from taking a bath. complaint summary: stitching is very bad, the front pocket material is thin and does not last, its almost like it was put there as an after thought. the lower thigh pocket gussets snag on everything, granted in my line of work things protrude from everywhere, but its the same in nature so not much to say there. the clip protectors are very narrow and if you use a knife or clipped flashlight often then the threading will definately come undone and the fabric will wear much more quickly than if the protector were extended to double up where clip rides and keeps threads out of the way. these are all pretty critical issues, yet i still cant stay away. the pocket placement and design is genius, the pant fabric is second to none that i have encountered, the fit is perfect,... i love these pants. 511, read this and make the upgrade. i have 12 pair, 5 of which are for only work. i dont wear any other pant. so these need to be perfect! oh and one other thing. if u carry, and u utilize all the functions on these pants, your firearm may have some squeezing in to do, mainly due to the fact that i carry a multi tool on the right rear because of the strap that holds it in place. would be sweet if there were a strap on the opposite pocket as well... just a thought.

TOUGH PANTS FOR THE PRICE!
CAUTION! Do not wear the light color pants (khaki, desert tan) for any type of mechanic work. I know that seems pretty obvious but i thought with its teflon technology it would all wash out. Not so. its a good thing i got the navy color as well as charcoal. The navy color is the best for that type of work, after six months of regular use it still shows no stains. Great pants all around, the little cargo pocket on the left fits an iphone perfectly. i never used the cargo pockets too much, but they lay very close to the leg and dont get in the way at all. I have worn these all summer, and Arkansas summers can get very humid. I stayed quite comfortable all summer long. In my line of work as a fleet mechanic, i go through pants very quickly, all four pairs show little to no signs of wear. They fit well and true to size, and should last for a long time.

Look great.
In my opinion these run closer to the size of dress pants than jeans. If you're like me that means you need a size larger for dress pants than your jeans. Generally I wear a 34x30 in jeans and 36x30 in dress pants. I went the safe route and bought 36x30s with these and wasn't disappointed. Theres enough room that they're a little loose but won't fall down and I can wear them without a belt if I want. I can tell 34 would just be a tad too snug for my preference, although they would still fit because of the stretchy part at the waist. First thing I wanted to see was how functional the cell phone pocket was (the one on the left hand side as you wear them) and to put it simply it fits a Samsung Galaxy S3 in an Otterbox Commuter series case, its a tight fit and definitely won't fit any phone bigger. I highly doubt it would fit if the phone was in a Defender Series Otterbox either. However the one on the right seems way smaller, I didn't even attempt to stuff my phone in, maybe without a case, but I would never carry my phone without the case when I'm wearing these, given the situations I'd be wearing these in. That would be just asking for trouble! The reinforced pockets are nice, the bottom of the opening has a thicker strip on it to prevent fraying that might come about from using a knife clip or similar clip. I keep a small Streamlight PT2L in one pocket and a knife in the other, I just got them so obviously no wear or tear there yet. The one feature I'm not a fan of, or rather lack of feature, is there is no zipper pocket for your wallet like the Blackhawk Men's Lightweight Tactical Pant have, instead you're stuck with two back pockets that have a tiny piece of Velcro keeping them shut and they're massive in width, so I'd imagine it would be rather easy for prying hands to find their way into your pockets and snatch your wallet if you aren't paying attention. Overall an excellent purchase and they look great too.
