In A New York State of Mind, Expressionism of Gotham City
The most artistic and contemporary of all the world's periodicals is the New Yorker. Since 1925 this magazine has recorded current events, brought forth great literature and yes the art work contained within its content is above reproach. Looking back at New Yorker covers one gets the sense of following history as recorded as current events and when looking at them many years down the road the covers symbolizes the evolution of history. Adrian Tomine's artwork blends into the eclectic mold of the oeuvre of what in essence is the New Yorker. The cover of this wonderful book is one of many of Tomine's New Yorker covers title "Missed Connection." The title, the expressions and the creation of the New York City scenes shows to the reader a truly unique "New York" experience. Paging through the artwork of this book one gets the sense of what Tomine is trying to convey to us. The expressions and backdrop scenery are the very essence of what New York City is and how all citizens perceive as to what this city is. This concept is not only true to Americans but it also holding true to people throughout the world. Tomine's artwork in and of itself is not defined by one style, it is rather eclectic when it shows emotions of the people of the city along with background scenery which is both haunting, descriptive and shows good use of light. Some scenes even remind me of the work of Edward Hopper with him being the purveyor of the artwork looking inside a building from the outside and the use of inside light. Very Hopperesque indeed!! As a longtime admirer of all things "New Yorker" I enjoy the great artists and writers who grace the pages of this classic periodical. I note the names of these people and Tomine is on that rather excellent short list!!

Great for browsing
I often find myself returning to this book while I look out the window of my Bronx apartment. Tomine does an excellent job of describing (often without words) the feeling and experience of living in New York. The cover illustration ("Missed Connection") sums it up perfectly - reading a book on the subway and seeing a cute person reading the same book on a different train, an experience almost any single person in New York has had. It captures not only the experience, but the emotion, the feeling. Relatively short and quick to get through, but an experience each time, and one that keeps giving.

Beautiful Drawings to Mull Over
New York Drawings is a collection work from Adrian Tomine, most of which originally appeared in the New Yorker over the last decade. I was concerned before buying this that I would be disappointed. I had seen some of Tomine's covers before - I have a copy of the great Amazon delivery one somewhere - but most of my exposure to his work had been through two of his graphic novels (Shortcomings and Summer Blonde). Still, the main thought running through my mind was will Tomine's themes of loneliness and alienation blend well with his love of awkward moments in a single panel? My worries were for nothing! This collection is amazing. I want to leave it on my coffee table so everyone can marvel over the images as I have. Some of my favorites - Lonely Girl and the image from the Buddhist Review - are not available online to show you and I am to lazy to scan them myself, but trust me they are so beautifully simple.Tomine manages to condense complexity to one page constantly. Take the cover of the book, so stunning and simple. Two strangers on trains heading in separate directions make eye contact as they read the same book. The loneliness and sense of lost opportunity that this image conveys needs time to be properly absorbed. Perhaps this is love for Tomine - two strangers destined to be heading separate ways. There are also a few short comic strips in here that showcase the wit and dialogue of Tomine - which is almost always great. However, if you really want to have more experiences with Tomine's comic work I would suggest picking up Shortcomings, Summer Blonde, or Optic Nerve #12 - they are all pretty amazing. If you are looking for a coffee table book, love drawings, are a fan of Tomine, or just want something different check this book out. If you happen to see it somewhere take a few moments to browse through it. This book is worth a first and second look. For more reviews by me check out my Amazon profile or visit my book blog at biweeklybooksreview [dot] blogspot [dot] com

A Collection Beautiful Illustrations
Fans of Adrian Tomine's comics will be familiar with his ability to convey a rich sense of inner life using little more than subtle cues in expression, posture and character design along with almost microscopic details about every day life. What they might not realize is that Tomine also had an extensive career as an illustrator - most notably for The New Yorker, but also for some less reputable employers. Collected here are over a hundred illustrations from that period documenting slices of New York life (real and imagined) alongside drawings inspired by movies and other pop culture which originally accompanied articles.Just a warning: there is just tiny handful of comics sprinkled in, so if you find that disappointing maybe this isn't for you. Check out the excellent Optic Nerve instead!

Amazing set of cartoons
I bought this book after seeing it a book store. I always check amazon because there are discounts here and that is exactly what I got. A good discount. Apart from that the item was delivered on time. The book by itself is amazing. Whenever you are bored or want to have a quiet smile to yourself because you have personally experienced it yourself here in New York city, this book suits the need. Definitely would recommend this to people who like such kind of illustrations. I think this would be an amazing coffee table book.

New York Drawings is the perfect table book.
I am a huge fan of the New Yorker and Adam Tomine. This book is a nice collection of his various works that have been displayed in the New Yorker Magazine. It offers a poignant view of life in the city. Beyond that the shipping was fast and the paper quality is very high.

Very happy with it!
The book looks practically new. I shop from worldofbooksde pretty often & I’m always very happy with the book’s condition. They are also very responsive and friendly! When it comes to the actual book, it’s got a few comics but it’s mostly drawings and covers. But worth the buy! Makes for a great coffee table book that you can flip through over and over.
