This product is a facsimile poster size copy of Magna Carta, the charter of rights which King John of England sealed under pressure from the Barons, at the Runnymede water meadows near Windsor on 15 June 1215 AD. Initially written by scribes in pedantic or abbreviated Latin, the charter was drawn up to protect the aristocracy and landed gentry from interference by the monarch, who was also to become subject to justice and the law for the very first time. It has been seen as the greatest historical document to influence our fundamental human rights down to this very day. So much so that even the founding fathers of the USA sought the spirit of the charter to influence their thoughts in the drawing up and preparation of the American Constitution in 1787. The Great Charter, though much mythologised, continues to be an important symbol of liberty throughout the world. This item is printed to look like an old parchment, hence the yellowing colour of the paper. It is approximately 37 cm by 52 cm in size. Suitable for pinning up for lessons in the classroom or even for framing should you wish. It is decorated with the arms of several Earls and Barons of the era and bears an imprint of the Seal of King John.
