What is Matcha Tea?

Matcha, ma (ground) cha (tea) is made by taking green tea leaves from the camellia sinensis (tea plant) and grinding them into a fine matcha powder which you can enjoy in a smoothie, a matcha latte, or traditionally with hot water. Perfect Ted organic matcha powder is shade grown and single origin, from Uji, the renowned matcha powder growing region in Japan. This authentic green tea is handpicked from local sustainable farms to bring you the best quality organic, ceremonial-grade matcha.

We’re often asked “Is matcha green tea good for you?” and about matcha tea benefits, and there are quite a few! Matcha powder is a superfood, containing L-theanine: an amazing amino acid known for reducing anxiety and increasing focus. Matcha powder also contains EGCG catechin, an antioxidant reputed to fight inflammation, speed up metabolism, and reduce cholesterol. Matcha green tea antioxidants contain roughly 50x more per gram than spinach. So, is matcha tea good for you? Well, we’re a bit biased but we think so, and when it comes to enjoying all of those matcha benefits you can’t beat a matcha latte with your favourite milk.

Does Matcha Powder contain caffeine?

You haven’t had caffeine like this before. This isn’t a coffee or an intimidating neon energy drink. Our organic matcha powder is slow releasing, so instead of getting that jolt and sped-up heartbeat for an hour, you will feel a gentle up-lift for 4-6 hours. No jitters. No crash. Whether you’re whisking up a matcha latte, or adding a dash to a smoothie, a single serving of 1-2 g will give you a similar amount of caffeine to a cup of coffee (around 60-80mg). This means that where a coffee will last a couple of hours, our organic matcha powder will give you a consistent flow of caffeine for 4-6 hours, that’s enough to get you through a busy day in the office!

What does matcha taste like?

Let’s clear this up, a lot of people have tried matcha powder once and been put off by bitterness, or a strong seaweedy, perhaps even fishy aroma. Now matcha, much like coffee can have a bitterness to it depending on your palette, so you need to figure out how you like it. Just with hot water should be thought of as your shot of espresso: strong and punchy, whereas topped with hot frothy milk for a matcha latte is the way to go if you like things on the gentler side. One of our founders, Marisa has ADHD & anxiety and suffered the negative side effects of coffee and sugary energy drinks for years. The jitters, crashes, and heightened anxiety made her neurodiversity even harder to deal with. Marisa then found matcha green tea, which enabled her to perform better at work by giving her slow-releasing energy and no jitters or crashes!
