As an architect - One of the most confortable drawing/writing tools I have
To start with, would I buy this again? Yes. Actually, when purchasing, I had the option of the tablet friendly version to write on screens, a black tip, or the metalic shiny golden copper one, which I favored. Because I do not have, and I do not plan to have, a tablet, and I like the shiny look better. But at least twice I remember being in a presentation room with a touch white board that I could write if I had selected that option, and since I did not, had to wait for someone to fetch the plastic pen that comes with it that nobody uses. It would be cool to use the same mechanical pencil I was just a second ago drafting on paper and walk to the board and keep drafting. That having being said, it is well weighted, the metalic body has a good grasp and feel to it, and the tip is very comfortable for holding, as is the sextavated body. It is very close to a Caran D'Ache mechanical pencil or pen in that sense, and since my 3mm lead one is a Caran D'Ache, switching between both to go from thick to thin lead is a good experience without changing grip. I like its looks, I like its weight, I like its metalic body. Is it perfect? No. The reason I got this one, was to replace a Pentel Graphgear 1000, which in turn, I got while still a graduate student, Graphgear 500. I am prone to dropping my mechanical pencils ( I think everyone does drop them, every now and then ) and they often will drop from the desk or drawing table, into a hard floor. A hard floor tends to bend the very tip of the pencil, where the mechanical lead dispenser tip is. More than once in graduate school I had after a particular nasty drop, on my 0.3mm pencil, have to unbend that very thin tip. SO, by the end of graduation already making some income as an assistant, I was able to get myself two 1000s. One 0.3 and one 0.7. On the 1000 the tip retracts if it falls to the floor. It works. But while at work, walking out of the subway, I had a nasty accident that broke my 1000 plastic body in half ( someone rushing out of the car, pressed me and my backpack against the wall and the pencil broke inside the bag ). I found the Rotring 800 while searching for a replacement, but sturdier. And it IS. I got it on 0.7 because it is one of my two everyday leads, and the retractable mechanism is stylish and based on twisting the base a bit, to expose the lead. If it falls to the floor, it retracts and protects the whole mechanism, just like the Graphgear. So, for me, this is a very stylish change for a better overall tool. It is all metal, so more resistant to rough encounters and also more comfortable for writing. BUT... I had on more than one occasion have to unbend the very front portion, the whole the lead tip comes from, due to also, falling tip first to the floor. The actual lead dispenser is protected, but the copper opening bent a couple of times, one, leading to the lead dispenser being stuck. I was able with some patience and a harder metal to insert on the whole and slowly bring it back in shape, to make it round and smooth again, and it still looks good. I guess another mechanical pencil would break instead. But the metal on the very tip is soft, and that could happen. It is not a deal breaker for me, and as I said, a simple steel pin for book binding or crochet tool would be enough to put it back into shape with some patience and care. But it is a tool that demands care, and this could happen. Also, the lead holder will not store more than 6 leads, which is enough for a week of work for me, but sometimes it has the same issue other mechanical pencils have of the lead not dropping in line. I never had a stuck lead, by the way, which is a huge improvement. The eraser on the back is somewhat shallow, and the usual metal pin for dealing with stuck leads is there, but instead of a casing, it is stuck directly into the eraser, so, if you constantly use the eraser on the back, be aware at some pint while erasing you might feel it scratching the paper, once you spend it enough the metalic pin gets exposed, as mine is. I often have a mono eraser with me, so I only use it on emergencies and it is ok, but I know many people prefer the built in one. If that is the case, get a few more erasers, or remove the pin altogether. As you can see I am nitpicking. This item was selected with much care, it is more expensive than most, and for me, it is a work tool. It feels like it, proper weight, balance, well constructed. With a few flaws other similar items also have. In my continuous search for a perfect mechanical pencil, it stands out as the best one I had in my life. And for that, it gets its five.

I use this pencil for office work and it’s easily the best mechanical pencil I’ve owned. It feels solid and premium because of the metal body, and it’s comfortable to write with for long periods. The weight makes it feel stable and controlled rather than flimsy. The standout feature for me is the retractable tip. It makes a real difference if you carry stationery around because I can put it in my pocket or bag without worrying the tip will bend or snap. That single feature makes it far more practical day to day than standard mechanical pencils, especially for commuting or moving between meeting rooms. Everything about it feels precise and well made, from the mechanism to the overall finish. It is more expensive than a basic pencil, but if you use it for work regularly it feels worth it because it’s reliable, satisfying to use, and built like something you’ll keep for years.

I often find myself with a mechanical pencil in my pocket and with the retractable tip you get a great mechanical pencil to write with and the tip won't get damaged or make holes in your pockets. Love this. I leave my 600 and rapid Pro at my desk and take the 800 with me in my pocket.
