A beautiful story
Great story. Many families have a father, mother or uncle who came to the USA seeking a better life but could not forget the people and the simple life that they left behind.

Great for TCKs
We love this book. We left our first copy overseas and had to order one again. Allen Say is a great author. My TCK kids love his books, as do I.

Wonderful book for third culture kids
This book and its sequel Tea with Milk tell a beautiful generational story of immigration. It is a wonderful picture of the tension one feels when torn between two homes or countries/cultures. I enjoyed reading it to my Third Culture Kids and it will be a staple in our library.

Beautiful illustrations
Beautifully illustrated book. I like it just for the illustrations alone! Also a good story for young children about immigration. This is a short read about a Japanese immigrant who has an American son, but goes back to Japan because he misses his homeland, only to long for the new country he's just left; it's based on the author's grandfather.

Simply Beautiful Book
Beautiful. It is a wonder that such a simple book, could be so moving. Short, easy to read text combined with beautifully simple illustrations tell the story of Mr. Say’s grandfather, who split his life between Japan and the United States, longing for both. This book would be perhaps especially cherished by those who know what it means to miss home. With a touch of history, this book could be tied into many different educational units… American immigration, WWII, or perhaps inspire an in interest in personal family history. I am to have added this beautiful book to our family library.

Outstanding Story for Children and Adults
For anyone who has lived in more than one country and has part of their heart in each place, this book resonates. And it does that so beautifully. Both the artwork and the simple prose are outstanding. It's a children's book, but it encapsulates, like no other book, the experience of the person who has grown to love more than one country. I've bought several copies because I keep giving mine away as gifts to adults who I know will find it moving because they've experienced something similar. Love this book.

Fantastic artwork and story line
Fantastic artwork and story line. It shows life coming full circle and connecting the young with the old. It also touches on historic events that open a dialog with your child about history. A great way to get children excited about reading, learning and discussing a variety of topics. I'm so excited that this book came with a CD. I can't wait to give it to my niece for her birthday.

Evocative and Poignant
Beautifully illustrated. The images seem deeply personal with an inherent sense of dignity. In this wonderful tribute to his grandfather, Allen Say, through his taut prose and pictures, takes the reader on a journey to find the place called home. As the old saying goes, Home is where the heart is. However, what happens if your heart is drawn by two places and very different cultures: the land of your birth and the land through which you journey and ultimately settle?Grandfather's journeys between the unnamed mountain village in Japan and the seacoast of California, evoke a sense of pilgrimage. Yet the story suggests that with changing times and circumstances, your feelings too can suddenly be changed. In a moment of suspense, it would appear that the restless tide of journeying has ended with grandfather's death. But the family line continues and in words remniscent of his grandfather, the writer states: "The funny thing is, the moment I am in one country, I am homesick for the other."Young children may find it difficult to connect with the pictures, (many of them, portraits of the Grandfather and his family). The issue of being an immigrant is probably outside their experience and although this is a story about adventure, it is more a reflection upon the feelings of the grandfather, rather than a suspense filled plot. As an adult, however, I loved this story. Although I have no personal experience of immigration, the skilful combination of writing and images enables you to enter into and empathise with the characters on their restless journeys between homes. Just like Allen, the reader is able to say, "I think I know...grandfather now."

Lovely book with beautiful illustrations
This was one of my favourite books as a kid, and one of the first ones where I saw a protagonist that looked like my family. The illustrations are gorgeous and the story is simple. One thing to note is that it does talk about "red" and "yellow" men. Definitely take the opportunity to discuss that with your kids when you read this book together.
