This is the story of Bastian Balthazar Bux, a 12 year old boy with a great imagination and a love of books. It is also a story about story-telling. Bastian borrows a special book from a local bookstore. The book is called The Neverending Story. Intrigued, he goes to the attic of his school, instead of his classroom with the book. Reading it, he is thrust into a kind of double life between his school and his imagination. Soon, he actually enters the book, choosing to affect by his actions the story that he is reading. He discovers the world of Fantasia, a wondrous magical world, full of interesting creatures and landscapes. Sadly, Fantasia is dying. A terrible force, The Nothing, threatens to destroy it all. The Childlike Empress, the ruler of Fantasia, is also dying, crippled by an illness that plagues the land. The inhabitants only hope is to send out a warrior, Atreyu, to try and find a cure. What Atreyu discovers is that the Childlike Empresss age is measured in names and must be given a new name to be reborn. But the only one who can give her this name is Bastian himself!

After receiving the first Volume as a present, I couldn't resist buying more of the Volumes to see what happened next. This is a lovely family series. Would recommend to fans of the movie.
