The Flowers of Evil - Complete 4

A great series ends with a wimper
I've given the last 3 volumes of this 5 outta 5 stars and they deserved each one......not so much here. Though it does get major points for reducing it's price for the shorter length, that's greatly appreciated. It and a few other things are why it's a 4 not a 3This was honestly a big dissapointment of an ending. I dont want to spoil it but i kinda have to at least in broad strokes. So. Warning.....Crucial questions that have been building since the beginning are just, ignored. Or deliberatly tossed aside. Why did Nakamura pushed Kasuga when they were gonna kill themselves? She forgot........wow that uh, that pisses me off. You asked that several times and even on the back cover and there's no answer. You could argue that fits her, and it does admittedly. I could even accept that it IS a deliberate anti-climax, still dont like it....what i CANT accept is this...why is Nakamura better? Why? She's barely the same person anymore. Woulda liked to know how that went but nooo forget that.It also has zero punch after Nakamura shows up. Before then tons, in fact my big plus for this is it's excellent direction and panel placement/layout and it contributes to the tension. After that it's an entire volume length epilouge, which is just so saccrine and dull. You could fairly argue everyone has earned a happy ending, and that is true they did. But it's such a massive tone shift right at the end that's it's incredibaly destractingThe final chapter showing everything from Nakamura's perspective was artistically brilliant as Oshimi normally is and a decent insight to her, but still it was space that could have told us about her post festival which is far more interesting.Overall, despite my ranting, it's not awful. Just dissapointing.

It made me think a lot.
This entire series was a mental blessing and release for me. It really dove deep into growing up, self-identification and discovery, validating yourself, and above all that a lot of people struggle with, moving on from scarred pasts. It follows a Male & Female protag Kasuga & Nakamura. These two get intertwined in perverted acts, criminal acts, suicidal acts, and a bunch of atypical middleschool aged drama that everyone experiences. The first two complete volumes revolve around Kasugas middleschool life and how it spirals downward with nakamura. the second two volumes follows kasuga and Aya Tokiwa going through their generic highschool life, while kasuga is insearch for something more to fill him again, while on a search for Nakamura. All in all, the manga did make me think, the art work was amazing. Would be lying if it didn't make me cry a lot about how life has turned out & how it's genuinely ok to move on with life.

Ending leaves you wanting more...
It was a great series overall and the ending was a bit anticlimactic. It left me wanting more. I don't want to spoil it for anyone else but it's kind of like a real life story where things kind of just happen and you grow up and move on with life. I understand it, but still wanted more.

Beautiful & disturbing story, with an ending I wish went a different direction.
I couldn't put down the first, second, or third volumes leading up to this. There is never a dull moment in this series. From Kasuga, to Nakamura, and Saeki, I can't decide which one is more unpredictable or messed up in the head. It's made me think about my own life and how society views people outside of the "norm." I'm definitely not normal and I know that, but I'm also normal in some ways - getting side tracked here. If you haven't already, pick up this series til the end. Beautiful artwork, with an amazing story. If you don't like stories that make you uncomfortable, it isn't the manga to read.

A Masterpiece
Bought all 4 novels on a whim after reading a review online about the series. If your looking for a solid series look no further, its like a mix of Fight Club and Oyasami Punpun (although nowhere near as depressing as Punpun). A series well written and illustrated through and through, I'll definitely be buying more of Oshimi's works. I'm not the best at writing reviews (I rarely do), but I hope if your reading this while considering reading these novels, don't hesitate. It's worth every second, I heartedly reccomend this series!

Japanese 'Catcher in the Rye'
The angsty teen melodrama comes to a satisfying ending. Loose ends are wrapped up and our hero grows into an adult. I initially was not sure I would enjoy this series but found myself ordering the next volume as soon as I finished the last. It reminds me of American fiction about bright, neurotic teenagers like 'Catcher in the Rye' or the movie 'David and Lisa."

Dirty book
The book cover was a little dirty from the top.

Final
Such a great manga from book one to this, really on edge with this one and it was a good pay off. The ending worked well, definitely worth a read from shuzo oshimi

Four Stars
Interesting coming, the translation often feels very weird but I'd rather let a native speaker to discuss this.

Empfehlenswert
Gelunges Manga-Werk, gelungene Übersetzung.Liest sich angenehm und der Stil passt zu den Charakteren.Ich kann nichts wirklich beanstanden und falls doch, wäre es lediglich Meckern auf sehr hohem Niveau. Was will man mehr?
